Trx450, you are correct. The four sizes you stated are the sizes that you can get. My 650 had a 1.4mm shim in it to begin with. What did yours have in it?

I just bought a P650. Would one of you please explain this shim thing to someone like me (who knows absolutely nothing about it). Also, is there some kind of technical manual that I could buy that would help me service my own machine? (kind of like the books that you can get for automobiles at autozone or checker auto parts).
Thanks

Look on my site under the pics I have a picture of the shims they are located in the driven pulley of your quads KAPS system. The manaual should run you around 35 dollars from your dealer and yes it is a wealth of information.

Thanks for your help. I love your website. How do I know if I have a 2002A or a 2002B. What are the differences?

TRX450, I'm not running any shims right now. I took out the .6 because my belt was just a little on the loose side. Now It squeals sometimes while idling in gear, so I figure if I get a shim that is slightly less than .6 it will work. Knowing my dealer, that information could be wrong about the shim sizes less than .6.

masterblaster--- Mine had the SAME shim 1.4mm, I am going to the 1.0mm tonite.
muddseeker---Are you SURE the belt was too loose? Did you check it with a scale, at the proper point on the belt? Your belt is too tight, if it squeals, in gear, sitting at idle. The manual has a "rule of thumb" chart for how much change you'll get in belt tension, for any given change in shim thickness. You cannot check tension with your finger, nyroc and I found this out the hard way, use a good fish scale to pull/push 13 lb. force on the belt.
SEE nyroc's 650 site----Much good info there. Good luck
BTW-- I have all the shims, except the .8mm(latest)shim. I was "hosed" $5.40/EA.. At least I won't have to wait for shims the NEXT time I go thru this!

I recently june 02 bought a 650p.
Ater a short while a squeling noise developed at pulloff for the first 2 meters or so. I sounds like belt slipage but it only occurs during the first 2 meters. Is this also to do with the pulley shim. Do i need to tighten the belt via a new shim? The dealer recons this is a maintenance issue and not a warrenty issue. is this correct?
Anyone please help

FARPOST-- The dealer may adj. the belt for free IF you don't have a lot of time/miles on it. Some do, some don't. It depends on the dealer's mood I guess!.
Your belt is slightly loose. Mine did the same thing. It also would "squawk" once on take off in the middle of a hill.
GOOD LUCK!

The problem is that the dealers know even less than what i do as the 650p is relatively new in South Africa. How did you tighten your belt? With a shim and which one?
Thanx for helping

FARPOST--- I would recommend getting the factory service manual.
How to adjust the belt is in "nyroc's" 650 site. Find one of his posts(here in this KAW thread), find his signature, click on "650 site". Much info here.
