650 Belt problem found?
#1
Here goes, had one put on, the service spec is 28.8mm (help me nyroc) well I used a digital caliper to measure the new belt at the wideset spot the NEW belt measured 28.56!!! the new belt was "worn out, to thin" they got another one out same measurement, now we know that the Kaw belt's are to thin It's no wonder they are wearing so fast, They out it on under warrenty and will call Kaw rep. with NO shim's at all the new belt is at 22.5 mm deflection! THIS IS CRAP, I called Kaw the tech said I didn't know how to measure the belt, I said I got 28.5 the mechanic got 28.6 to thin according to you all, He said he would look into it and get back to me, anyway I have a NEW belt that is 28.5 mm wide on it under warrenty so let's see how long it lasts. I'm pissed about this the new belt's shoul be 29.5 -30.5 mm wide or wider I think. ALSO my dealer said the 650 belt was $90 bucks the 360 belt is $140!!!!!! I may do the 360 belt next time, he didn't have one but I here it is wider......

Looky here. There is a pic of the belt measurement. It is a funny way of doing it. You guys were not quite measureing it right. Your belt is fine. Use it.
Hey, my new belt installed at 22mm deflection and it has taken almost 500 miles for the sqeak at idle to go away (tight). I would guess it will go 1500 more. It is wearing very slow. It grabs superbly and takes off wonderful.

Hey guy's, I had mine replaced because it was chirping pretty bad when I took off, and with no shim's there was nothing more I could do, my tech said it was still in tolerance on deflection and called Kaw to talk to someone about it, I told him to tell them I had the extended warr. and if the belt was worn out ir out of spec on deflec. I would not complain about paying for a new one even though this oringinal belt had 1900 miles on it, BUT it was still in spec so there is a problem somewhere and I think they should be respnsible, Kaw agreed to replace one belt for me under warrenty but said if this one start's chirping in a few hundred mile's they would call it defective and replace it too, MY BIG QUESTION IS, if the 360 belt is indeed wider and can take the extra power of the 650 maybe we need ot use them and be getting more life out of our belt's, why the 650 belt is 90 bucks and the 360 is 140 is still blowing my mind, I told Kaw rep that I love this machine if they could only do someting about the belt/clutch thing I told him the belt's shoud be wearing a little better and maybe their company that makes the belt's for them are screwing them not meeting Kaw's spec's, he said they were experimenting with new compound's for more durability and said they haven't tried a 360 belt on a 650 yet but made note of what I suggested and would stay in touch........... I'll tell more when I know more........

Roscoe, I bought my 650 from Pro-Am. You're right. Good service there. Kerry was the best guy to deal with out of all the guys I phoned when I was searching for the best price. The worst guys to deal with were the guys from Blackfoot Motorsports. I can't remember the name of the guy I was dealing with there, but he was bloody rude. Oh well. His loss. Between my buddy and myself, we dropped about $18,000 in Pro-Ams shop in one day. Kerry was so nice to deal with, I wouldn't have minded spending $100 or so more for my wheeler. He made it real easy. I might buy a 360 for the wife next year, and Pro-Am is gonna be the guys I go to, even if it is an 8 hour drive.

yes great service , any time i call for parts they get right on it, none of that duh! we dont knew what that is or the old we cant get that.
I found they are a little higher in parts but the service is worth most of it.
Bought quad at Bowness, best price but had to drive 5 hrs there and 5 hrs back. Unforunately they didnt knew any thing about 650 from parts to service, have never been back figured i better learn to fix it myself.

Were you guys measuring the belt at the widest point or were you using 2 straight edges held with the angle of the belt then measuring between the straight edges at the top of the belt? If your were just measuring with a caliper at the edges that why it shows the belts were to narrow. I think nyroc has the proper belt measurement procedure on his site. I did the same thing. Then took it to my dealer then they measured it the proper way and it was in spec. I had them measure it in front of me so i knew they were being honest.
