Not worried over the 650 anymore

1000 miles on it and perfect, until now. Runs terrible. It opens up and will idle, but sounds like it's running on one cylinder. Checked the plugs and man were they dirty, black and all gooed (?) up. Have a feeling the choke is sticking. Cleaned the plugs and checked firing, no help. Going over to do a search on the choke springs, wish me luck!

Take the square piece of plastic off on the front , just under your steering column, you'll see a round tube, that is your air snorkel, (air to carbs). Make sure that nothing is blocking it, if there isn't try a quick run with the plastic off, see if that makes a difference. I have heard of the air tube being covered by a flap or the plactic, can't remember which, anyway it was like running with the choke on. Probably will have to clean or change plugs to get back to normal.
good luck.

The gas is good. I pulled the air lid off to see if it helped, no difference. When I move the choke lever at the bars it only makes the slightest difference in running, hot ot cold. There is one thing odd, when I pulled the air filter out I noticed that it felt like it weighed a two pounds and oil was dripping out of the bottom of it and oil in the air box, but engine oil on the stick is right on full. When it started running bad it was all at once, I rode it one day and fine, the next day terrible. Since I've got the plastic off and most everything else off on the top side I'm going to do a major tune up. First thing, going to pull the choke springs out to see if they're the old ones, if so going to find some stronger springs, change plugs, check valve clearence, check bolt torque on cylinders ( there is some nasty oil leaks in there ), adjust carbs, change oil, fluids and water, but first to get it running right then the tune up. I love working on them when they're running good, it just worries me when it's not, but I'll get it running and let yall know what the problem was. I love this quad so I'm not upset or anything, just makes me feel sad that my baby doesn't feel good. Wish me luck!

I fixed it!!! The choke cable was to long ( the outer part ), it was keeping the choke on just enough to foul the plugs after awhile. I knew that was it when I looked at the cable adjuster, it was already screwed all the in from the factory ( Part # 54017-1219 ). I called my dealer about the new cable ( part # 54017-1222 ) and he told me to bring it in to be adjusted, he said there was a trick to it,lol. The new cable is $21, so I went out and took a small pair of vice-grips ,10mm and 8mm open end and forced it tighter, probably got about 3-4mm more out out of it. It has never ran as good as it does now.

I just adjusted my belt deflection. It was 1.2'' and I pulled the shim and got .80''. It doesn't creep or squeal in gear at idle, it takes off great now!

Trail Hog, dealer should not have charged you anything for putting that updated cable on your 650, Talked to kaw rep a year ago about mine and he said they knew there were some problem's with about 50% of the 650's with choke cable's, they made a new design, with the new part number and instructed dealer's to install the new one's free if someone had a problem.......that was 8-12 months ago

Stakk I agree with ya, going to do some more calling Tuesday. What I can't really figure out is why it took a 1000 miles for the problem to show up. I guess it was just so close that it took awhile to foul the plugs, I always thought it ran great, but man what a difference it made mid-range power and smoothness. The dealer didn't even know about the new cable until I gave him the number and ask him to see if he could pull it up,lol.
Anyone who owns a P-650 I would suggest the next time you had the plastic off the bars to look at the part # on the choke cable, it is right there by the adjuster, if it's not a 54017-1222 ( it will probably read 17-1222,17-1216,17-1219 ) I would call the dealer. I would have hated if that happened out on the trail somewhere.
