Default Aftermarket Exaust Problems...Kaw650

Does anyone know if what i have heard is true at all. I have heard with an automatic tranny, when you install an aftemarket pipe, that your engine will do soo much better. You ATVs tranny does not and cannot take full advantage of this new power, b/c of adjustement differences. Does anyone know of this, and is there anything that can be done about it?
Thanx

For some reason, polaris riders will often tell you this. It is true for quads with narrow powerbands, you have to change the cvt weights and springs to adjust the engine's rpm.

The 650 engine has a wonderfully broad powerband and doesn't require the cvt mods like other quads do. You could get better power by keeping the engine at a better rpm range during acceleration by changing weights and springs. This need to do this isn't nearly as significant as it is in other quads (especially 2 stroke polaris).

A lot of us have made the proper spring and wegith adjustments to get make maximum power. You can do it very easily. Most of us are just content with the black spring because of it's minimal affect on driveability.

It sounds to me like someone gave you the idea that adding a pipe would be a complete waste. That is extremely not true.

What they are saying is this, a stock quad and cvt, the trans is set to upshift and work at a certain rpm, example 5000 rpm, and you ad an aftermarket pipe. an aftermarket usually raises peak horsepower at a higher rpm, such as the stock makes it's power peak at 5000, the aftermarket may make more power at 6000 rpm, if you don't tune the cvt to upshift and peak at that higher rpm, then you are not getting the full "power benefit" of the pipe and jetting etc, etc. like the other's said, the 650 has a mile wide power band so any muffler mod will result in more power,,,,But for an example on my 650, I added the HMF, DJ,AIR filter, etc, but did nothing to the cvt, an got a very good power increase, well EPI informed me that when you gun the 650 it ingages at about 1400 rpm and goes to 6000 rpm and stays there until the belt goes through it's travel then slowly gain's top speed, all stock, well with the red/black spring combo, engages at 2000 rpm, upshift's at 6500 rpm instead of 6000 then continue's on up, how since My HMF pipe makes power higher in the rpm range, when I added the spring's and the cvt was now upshifting and peaking at about 500 -1000 rpm more I am getting the "FULL" effect of the pipe and other mod's, Power increase is "ALOT" better now with the red/black spring cvt mod along with the other's... Hope I haven't confused you, so bottom line is if you want the full effect of a pipe/jet kit combo, use a clutch kit also....
