Default Air Filter Question

If the 03 Prairie Air filter has 30% more area, is there any advantage
in going to a K&N or Twin Air Filter?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Default Air Filter Question

Oxygen:

I am gonna run a twin air in the summer and a stock filter in the winter, Because in the winter time it's too dam cold to be hauling a$$ and in the summer time the Foam twin air gives more air to the carbs with out the dirt. K&N are good filters but small particles of dirt can still get through them. I would just go with a twin air and some good oil. (Just my 2 cents)

You are right on about the K&N air-filters, they are not recommended for dusty riding conditions, like you & me have to deal with.
I presently have a Twin-air filter on order, hopefully it will be in soon.

Default Air Filter Question

I just wanted to say that the newgate parts dept. are total morons!!!
I ordered my twin air filter 2 weeks ago and they told me it was finally in.
I went down there to pick it up and they ordered a 2002 p650 filter, when i told the guy that was the wrong filter he told me it was the same as the 2003's filter. WHAT AN IDIOT!!! I don't know how they are even in business... Needless to say i had already paid for the filter so i came home and got on twin.com and called the guy with the right part #. Now i gotta wait another week cuz it's on back order. I don't know to much about parts and such but i do know what a filter is jenny lol (Just had to let off a little steam if you know what i mean.) THATS WHY I BOUGHT FROM BIG BOYS TOYS!!! AND NOT NEWGATE HONDA.

Default Air Filter Question

can anyone get too much air? I'm running K&N. should I switch to twin air? I thought "twin" was a part of K&N. I run mine in dust etc and no problems keeping my carbs clean... I will not run the stock filter.

Unifilter makes a filter for the 650 also. Don't know anyone who runs one. Anyone who has one------what do you think of it?

Default Air Filter Question

Hey ATV fans, if air can pass through an air filter, what makes you think dirt can't ?

Micro dirt particals will pass through any filter. Some more than others.
K&N Air filters have oil. Twin air filters have oil. Stock filters have oil.
K&N have as much as 50% more surface area. So need a little more oil maybe ?

My 650 P has 1600 miles now. The carbs don't get dirty. The bottom of air box has slight residue.
Ran stock filter for 1400 miles. Cleaned it every 10 hours with soap and water, then reoiled with K&N air filter oil.
The residue stopped after I switched to Castrol Synthetic motorcycle oil in 20/50.
I ride dust, sand, mud and weeds, grass, over trees, and in swamp. All in the Missouri River bottoms.

When you shut off motor, Hydrocarbon fumes(Gases) pass up from motor to carbs and airbox, creating a residue. Synthetic oil reduces this residue.

Been to Glamis CA, Flagstaff AZ, Little Sahara sand dunes in OK., Chadwick, St Joe, Deep water, Finger Lakes in MO.

2003650,

I bought from newgate and the sales guys are allright but you are right about the parts department. I still don't know how I feel about their service department. They seem like they don't have a clue about anything else but changing the oil. Full Throttle in centerville seems to be very knoledgable. You should give them a call next time you need a part.

Default Air Filter Question

PRAIRIETWIN,

did you use the k&n oil that comes in the spray can to re-oil your stock air filter? do you think that you could use the k&n air filter cleaner on the stock foam filter? what do you think? just curious.

Default Air Filter Question

Use oil from K&N recharge kit for stock filter. But I would run the foam filter through dishwasher with dish soap not Cascade. Any solvents on foam makes them come apart faster. They dry faster but you'll replace them often.
Haven't tried the K&N cleaner on foam !..........................Let me know!
