glowing headpipe on 650
#1
i have noticed on my 650 prairie that the headpipe turns red when running throttle up to say 3000 rpm's in neutral for about 1 minute, my friend has 2 prairie 650's they both do it, i'm wondering what you all think is the problem if there is one, maybe its normal i don't know, appreciate any input

In an automobile, a glowing red header tube is caused by a Lean condition. But at a sustained 3000 rpm I would expect it. When I purchased my KFX400, the service manager told me that because of the fact that they are using thinner material (In the case of the KFX, I believe Stainless, I may be wrong.) I should expect it to turn red under use.
I may be wrong, but I wouldn't worry about it, especialy if it doesn't seem to be uncomon among you and your friends 650's.

it only happens to me when i dont ride it for a long time (a week or more) when i see it turning red i shut it off and let it cool down a bit and start it back up and works fine. got the **** scared outta me the first time it happened!

A lot of engines will do that too,
However, a lot of 650's are a bit lean from the factory. They may not be hurt by it, but they don't run as well this way.
Motorcycle riders often richen things up a little more than a typical fuel injected auto motor is set for.
