Nyroc, very important question (please reply ASAP)

I had the squeal when stopped in gear. Found out I had the belt too tight. I had taken shims out and measured deflection without a weight scale. Took it apart and measured with a fish scale and found that I needed a small shim. Now I'm at the low end of the spec and have no squeal at all.

MDG,
Thanks for the info! I'll have to check it. I only had one shim in the clutch, so removed it. I guess I may have to order different size shim that is in between the one that was there and nothing at all.

MDG--I did the exact same thing! Didn't realize just how accurate the pressure on the belt had to be. I just poked at it, and thought" that ought to be good.".....WRONG! Live/learn.

I bought one of each of the shims just in case. They are pretty cheap.
I had heard that a little squeal with a tight belt was OK. It drove me nuts so I checked it again. Glad I did!

i think that i would have more confidence in tightening my own belt and putting my own black spring in if i knew exactly which one of the clutches was the primary and which was the secondary. im so dumb i dont even know what the sheaves are. i might understand it better too if i would just dig into it. im trying to go off of nyrocs pics but when youve never even seen inside the belt cover its kinda difficult to determine what is what. i got the black spring today (thinking it was a little spring) when i opened the package it was huge! does the service manual show you how to do this too? (detailed) thanks for the info on your web page nyroc, i wish i had your knowledge.

MDG-- Great Minds Think Alike! I have a complete set 'o shims, too, including the hard to find 4th, (1.4mm?) one.
Rammy--- The rearmost clutch is the "driven clutch", the one on the engine crankshaft is the "drive clutch". I believe that is how they are designated in the service manual anyway. You have a KAW service manual, right?

Get the service manual it's great. Then take the CVT cover off and go for it. Any dummy can do it, I'm proof of that. When you are finished you will be confident that it was done right.
sheaves = pulleys
Now suck up those b@lls and start wrenching!
