why does everyone hate the stock tires?
#1
I have had my 650 a couple of weeks now. I have ridden on pavement, hard pack, white rock roads and a little snow. I have'nt had trouble with the stock tires. So I am wondering why everyone trashes them? I guess I could see if you were into living in the mud 24/7 that there are much better choices or if you wanted to go in sand dunes.
But if you just want to do general all around riding I have'nt found the flaw in the stock ones. Maybe someone will enlighten me as to what I am missing.

For one, they won't last very long, very soft rubber & they don't hold up well in rougher type country.
The Prairie 650 Dunlops are a little better than the Dunlops on the Grizz660 but not by much. Where a Grizz660 will spin out, the Prairie 650 would get traction.
When the time comes for you to get replacements & you end up getting a different brand than the Dunlops, then you will see why the stock tires aren't so great.

I like the tires on my quad. They've held up great and I ride alot. The rear tires seem to have held up a little better than the front. But I can see why some people would change. I don't like some of the Yamaha stock tires on their utility quads. One reason to change tire brands after they wear down is that it might cost more to replace with original.

The stock tires are good for 2 things. Riding on the road ( easy to get the rear end to step out), and building a signal fire. When they wear out ( shouldn't take to long) go with claws or mud lights or something along those lines. But if you like 'em then just order the same thing again, soft rubber compound might be the way to go if you ride lots of big rocks.

The stock tires are only two ply. I picked up a thorn on my first ride. Now I ride straight through thorn bushes and don't think twice. Also, the front tires would tend to roll over on sharp turns because of the thin sidewalls. That has gone away w/new tires.
I have a set of brand new Dunlop take offs, if some of you guys that like the tires are interested?

Big Rocks were the only place my dunflops really impressed me, because they were so squishy. But on hard pack, going around a corner, notice how sloppy the front end feels due to the squishy tires, suprised one hasnt jumped off the rim yet. Traction isnt bad, just too soft.
