Default Shims under needles ?

I am planning to re-jet this week and was talking to Mastrblastr about it, he mentioned putting washers under the stock needles. Can anyone tell me what this will do ?
Thanks

Hey Linehand. Woke up this morning to a full fledged snowstorm. Was gonna get my airscrews tweaked today, but liked the feel of my couch so that job got put on hold till the weather gets better. I believe the shims will improve your throttle response. I was told not to go over 60/1000 of an inch of shims as you will have fuel squirting problems. Hope someone else responds to this thread cause I am still a rookie at this carb stuff.

Mastrblastr - good point on the 60/1000's of an inch. It warmed up yesterday, and while riding, if I moved the throttle suddenly from 1/8th to 1/4, 1/4 to 1/2, etc., I'd get a slight rich hesitation. I've got 70/1000's of an inch worth of shims. I'll try leaning out the pilot screws a bit before I tear it apart and pull out one shim. I'm currently using 3 tiny #4 washers under each needle. (Or maybe I'll get lazy and drill a couple more holes in the airbox lid, lol)

BCLINEHAND - putting shims under the needle will make the machine richer in the mid-range and improve your throttle response. I believe that one of those pop-rivet backing washers is about 40/1000's of an inch. That's a good place to start. Do you have any intake/exhaust mods that make you want to rejet?

Default Shims under needles ?

Nova, I have 2 shims under my needles right now. I got some tiny washers from Canadian Tire (thanks Oshawa). They fit fairly well. Alltoys was telling me they mic out to around 20/1000 of an inch apiece, so 2 should work well. I haven't had the proper weather to set the airscrews but I do notice a power increase and a definite improvement in throttle response. Baby steps now will get all my mods dialed in. I have my homemade snorkle on, 142/145 jets, muffler modded and 3 1-1/4" holes in my airbox lid. I also have a custom airbox vent for riding at higher elevations. I want to get a Unifilter, but Royal Distributing is out of stock and I just can't deal with the shops around here. Some ramp weights and a CDI box are on the scope for the future. I hear there is a guy in Quebec that is building a CDI box for the 650 for around $350 Can. Don't know any more details, but if anyone does, keep us informed.

Yup, those are the same washers I use: they mic out at .025 dead on.

Default Shims under needles ?

I am thinking of trying the bigger Keihin main's and stock needles in my 650, my question, I have 4 shims that came in my dynojet kit, they fit the stock needles perfect but I don't have a mic. or a set of calipers to measure them, I put 2 under the stock needle and it looked like it may be close to.040, but I don't know for sure, does anyone know how thick the dyno-jet shims are? would 2 thick be ok or just one? I may need 3, can anyone that has them mic them for me and let me know, ALSO I have my DJ kit pretty well dialed in no hesitation 9 out of 10 times, so I need to know from you guys that have pulled the dj kit and went back to the stock needles with shims and just bigger Keihin mains, does the Keihn run BETTER than the dj? if it just runs as good I don't want to go back into them carbs, but if it will accelerate faster with the Keihn's I'll pull the dj kit out, I have an HMF slip-on WITH the quiet core, NAPA rad hose for a bigger snorkel and 5 uni-vents in the lid, and I live and ride anywhere between 1200-3200 ft. above sea level, If the Keihn set-up will be better with all my mods and factor in my ele, do I need to go with the 142/145 Keihn main's or 145/148 main's? I have both, but don't want to go to rich on the main's....Sorry for the long post, I just need to know for sure before I tear into my carbs again..........

Stakk,

The DJ jets are not worth the powder to blow them you know where. The stock jets that came with the quad are larger by volume than the largest DJ jet in the kit. The washers are roughly 0.020 you are safe to use 2 a piece on the Keihin needles.
