Does anybody know if the black front covers are important? Mine both broke and the only way to replace them is buy the whole strut.

Yes they are important they keep rocks and debre gtom hitting the strut and dammaging the center. You don't have to get factory just get a set of outer ware(I think) a lot of sport bikes use them to protest there shocks.

I am running without mine, I have the progressive springs and they don't fit well. I am sure they help protect the shocks from rocks and debris and dust, but the vast majority of the other Atv's on the market don't come with shock spring covers on the front, so I personally don't feel like their that important.

However, Pbear if you want another set mine are in perfect shape and I will sell them to you cheaper than the dealer, make me an offer if you like.

The top section of the plastic holds the spring and retaining clip in place. You must have at least that much of the plastic left. I think MastrBlastr machined an aluminum piece to replace the plastic completely. Very nice work.

letcherKY - How did you get your springs to stay in place? I was going to leave the covers off mine but it looked like they would have to be there for the top of the spring to rest against.

Hey there guys, without the plastic peice does it look funny, i mean does it look like a normal quad with out the platic cover or what. I also think that you do not need them because other quads including polaris's with struts in the front do not use them. If it looks good with out them i would cut them right off. I get mud up in there and it makes sounds when ever my quad moves, and yes i tried washing it out. LAter all. bye

Novakaw is right. Letcher, I don't know what is keeping your spring in place without the plastic cover. There is a groove in the top of the plastic cover that a c-clip fits into that seats against the top of the rod on your shock. Without it, your spring would have nothing to hold it in place.

Pbear, I busted one of my stock plastic ones too. As Nova said, I machined a set out of aluminum and they work fine. I went through the same crap as you did. Was told by my dealer I would have to buy a complete strut. I DON"T THINK SO!!!!!!! Look at my pics if you want to see what the aluminum ones look like.

Thanks for the help. I still have the very tops so I think I will get some of those shockwears to go over the shocks. Does anybody know where you can get them for the 650?
