Default Why filte the airbox?

I know lots of people are running uni-vents or similar, but I have to ask why? The air entering through the snorkle is unfiltered, why bother filtering the air entering through the extra holes? Why not just vent the lid and let the stock location filter take care of business? It's a common practice on bikes and most recently my diesel pickup(huuuuuge intake hole now). I know the vents only cost about $4, but that's still a couple gallons of gas to play with on the trails with. Why not just run without a lid? Personally I'm looking for a scoop to mount through the plastic straight into the box...
