You did nothing wrong.
Throttle sticking is just that.
This sometimes is caused be the cable being bad in general,or at the point where it comes out of the thumb throttle,it seems to get bent at this point.
lube the cable and lube the slide in the carb.
Make sure the cable dont bend on it's route to the carb.

ok the throttle cable isnt kinked or anything it moves freely back in forth but it moves really freely like it isn't connected inside the carb is this possable and if that is my prob. would it be easier and safer for my son if I took it to a dealer?

Tough question 450rutmaker. I know one thing for sure, I highly reccomend teaching your kid to be familiar with the kill switch. Even if you get it fixed, they absolutely have to know where the kill switch is and always be ready to hit it. You never know.

For safety sake,,yes,, I would take it to a person that knows more!
You can check one more thing:: It sounds like the carb cable needs to be adjusted. this is done on the top of the carb (the hollow screw that the cable goes through w/lock nut) IF the cable is too loose, the cable can come out of the proper position and become lodged on the top of the hollow screw, thus the throttle sticks,or seems like it.

You unscrew (raise) the adjustment screw in the top of the carb.Adjust it till your thumb throttle has little to no play in it.
I think we found the problem

I put a stiffer spring on it.
