I would like to hear opinions for a first quad for a 9 year old boy, he is reserved......a little chicken[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif[/img]
I would like him to be included, but I don't want him to get freaked out. I am thinking about a 90, not to sure on the brand yet. My Husband thinks that a 90 would be a waste, that my son would out grow it too quickly. Please share your thoughts[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]

 

While it may be true that a 9 year old will outgrow a 90 in just a few years, quads are not something that you get hoping that they will eventually grow into. Instead, find a quad of the right size that is of good quality so it will hold it's value. If you start out with too much machine, he will only be scared or uncomfortable and not enjoy riding. Get him the size that fits NOW so he has a better chance to enjoy riding insdead of becoming scared of it. You don't say how tall or heavy your son is, but if he is "reserved" then you definately want an automatic quad. Unless he's big for his age, I'd say an LT80. It can be restricted in many ways while he is learning and can even be modded if he becomes expert.

One thing that we do with our kids is to use voice activated helmet radios. This way we can talk them throughany difficult situations and they are more at ease since they can always ask advice or call for help.

I agree with Jaybee about not getting a kid a quad to grow into... kids don't have the judgment to ride a big powerhouse, let alone fit on them properly. People don't buy their kids a 18speed 26 inch mountain bike for their first bicycle... why would they do this with a quad? Don't be a tightwad and wind up getting your kid hurt.

There are a number of 90cc two stroke out there, that would work great. Most can be built up (scary fast) or restricted depending on his ability. Some vary in size and options, but most are the exact same parts. I still have a blast on my son's 50cc and I'm 6'4" 225! You are correct in not wanting to scare him if he is a little timid, it can be intimidating being on a machine that is too big.

 

Thanx for your replies, as for hieght he is average for 9 and weighs about 70lbs. I also figure that after I narrow down which brands and models that I would like for him, that I will take him down to "try them on". He does have experience with a honda 110 3 wheeler.
