Clanking Chain on Eton Viper 90
#1
I have noticed from recently riding behind my daughter's 04 Eton Viper 90 that the chain seems to be clanking a lot on bumpy areas. Is this totally loose or is this normal?

I believe there is a chain tensioner on the rear that can be adjusted, it should not be clanking that much. Check to see if it is real loose as it sits, there should be some play, but not real loose. We had this problem on a friends in the desert a while ago, and I believe it was a real easy fix.

I've been told the manual chain tightener is on the rear of the E-Ton 90. If I remember correctly, the E-Ton doesn't come with a factory spring loaded "roller type" chain tensioner. When chains are new, they tend to stretch - then don't stretch as much as time goes on. For riders doing lots of jumps, rough trails or racing, many people install a spring loaded chain tensioner on their quad. This reduces the risk of its chain coming off, reduces chain wear the reduces the amount of time intervals between tightening its chain. For the E-Ton and many other brands without a factory spring load chain tensioner, some people purchase an OEM "bolt on" type tensioner, or universal chain tensioner and weld them to the swing arm. For "around the house" or minor trail riding, most people don't install a 3rd party chain "roller type" tensioner.
If wondering, I installed a HPD spring loaded "roller type" chain tensioner on our '03 Pred-90 unit. Haven't needed to tighten its chain since then.

If you need to adjust your chain every ride the chain must be shot.We bought a 04 Viper this summer and the chain was only adjusted twice, once in the dealer checkup and then near the end of the summer after many many miles of trail riding and quite a few races.Keep the chain well lubed and clean. Blastermom the chain is easily adjusted.Loosen two bolts on the rear swing arm and then tighten up the adjuster unitil you have 10-20mm of slack.Retighten the bolts and your good to go.

Yes we love our Viper.Only had it for this summer as we're just getting into the sport but so far its been bulletproof. My son rides it on trail rides with me and my wife and he also races it.My son loves all its bells and whistles, horn, lights, brake lights, oscillating LEd light and its cool styling and bright yellow colour.I like the powerful hydraulic rear disk brake and heavy duty 520 chain and sprockets. The rear suspension is very good although the front could use more travel but its still as good as most mini's.Also all fenders are detachable and can be replaced seperately. They also come with racing style Maxxis tires. Its very light for a 90 at 209 LBs but it is also rated to carry 250 Lbs.So far we just put gas and oil in and go.It still has the original spark plug in it. Congratulations.I hope your kids love it as much as my little guy does. Our Viper came with the headlights fully functional. My dealer explained that the mini atv's are not allowed to have headlights in the USA so they either remove the headlights or just cover the existing lights with a chrome like sticker.Seems dumb to me but the lights are easily made functional again by just removing the stickers.Good Luck and feel free to ask any questions
