Default Youth ATV questions (Our First)

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday we picked up a 2000 Monsoon 90 for the kids and today I took the oldest out to give it a try. Even with the throttle stop turned it the machine would keep picking up speed. I know this is due to the type of tranny so she will have to learn to watch her speed by herself or we will pull the kill tether. To mee the throttle stop just makes taking off harder but that's fine for now.

The problem we did run into was on our way back up the driveway the Mansoon kept dying every time she hit the gas. It would fire up and idle fine but sputter and die again when she hit the gas. I sent her off to play since she was no longer having fun and looked it over. I turned out the throttle stop and after a few seconds it was running great and I was whipping circles in the driway.

The second problem is that this little thing likes to make wide circles (when the rear wheels are not spinning). Some times it was as if it didn't want to turn at all. I'm hoping that most the problem is the fact that it needs new tires, the ones on it are almost bald. (The previous kid drive it every where)

Well my list of fixes are only removing the sag in the rear fenders, new tires, try to remove the play in the steering (not too much but it is noticable), and try to find a way to get the front plastic to stop vibrating when the engine is reving.

Oh one more thing! My daughter's hands are too small to use the brakes correctly does anyone have any suggestions?

Last thing this little machine has a cross drilled disc on the back instead of drums. Now that is slick!

It is probably loading up when the throttle is restricted revving it out will take care of that problem, the reason it ran great when you rode it. 2 storke really dislike being run at lower RPMs. You can attempt to restrict the roller weights in the front variator in the CVT, the Arctic Cat comes stock with washers in the variator that do not allow transmission to "shift" into the higher speeds. By not allowing the weights to roll to the outer edge of the variator, it will dramatically lower the top speed at any RPM. You might try brake levers off of a bicycle, they tend to be smaller and easier to operate.

For the bawging problem here is a sugestion. Sounds like its going to be ran at low rpms for awhile. Turn the air/fuel screw that is recesed in the front part of the carb a 1/4 turn out. By doing this it will lean the mixture of air/fuel at 1/4 to 1/2 throtal. You may have to adjust the spring loaded Idle screw that sticks out the carb right above the air/fuel screw. To idle it up turn the spring loaded screw in and turn out to idle down.

If the front wheels are sliding while you turn you defantly have a traction problem. Get new tires.

If the tires are not the problem try and tow the wheels in some by adjusting the tie rods.

Good luck

TLD
I have a 01 monsoon and i've been trying to get info about it since i bought it. My boy is almost 5 and i have the same prob as you with the throtle screw. I put it way in and he can't even get it moving at all and when i screw it out so it will barely start crawling it does just that starts crawling and then just picks up speed real fast. The brakes have been a real pain in the butt for me, just got the back adjusted ok but the fronts i'm having a heck of a time with. Does anyone know what motor is in these or if it's a knockoff of another quad(yerf dog is the same)? Mine also is a serious vibrator!!!! Anything you do that helps the SOON please let me know and i will let you know if i ever figure out how to help my beast out.
Thanks Chris

Wow thank you all for all the helpfull info.

2 Gordons: Looks like I will have to find a repair manual so I can look into the CVT portion of this. The problem with using the bike levers is that the right one has 2 cables coming in for the front brakes and the left one has an electrical hookup so it knows when the brake is pressed for electric start. Hmmm.. I will be digging into this further.

Terd: I remembered reading this somewhere but didn't remember where.

Mxmike: I will have to look into this. messing with the carb is a bit intimidation because I have never played with one and I'm nervious about screwing something up and leaning it too much. This is also why my Predator sits all winter. It needs to be rejetted for below 40 degree driving. looks like I will be learning some carbetation very soon between the two machines. On the tire issue, yep it deffinitly needs a new set.

Thanks again!

Oh where the heck is a good place to find youth tires? the ones on the Monsoon are 19x7x8. I have rocky Mountains catalog but they don't list anything that would really fit on the machine.

Moochie I called the number for Monsoon Motor sports and it seams like they are now Yerf-Dog. I think Monsoon sounds better but they are the same machine.

I was looking into the vibration today while getting it to run again and it seams like it the plastic vibrating on the gas tank. I pressed and pulled on most the front plastic with no change till I pressed by the gas cap. I will be looking into a way to quiet this down when I get a chance, hopefully I will comeup with something in the next couple of months.

I had an easier time adjusting the brakes since the tires on ours are almost bald. I just gave it a little gas then hit the brakes watching to see how they worked. At first the right one would lock up and slide while the other didn't do much but after that they were both working better. The front drum brakes are still no match for the rear disc but I have no clue how worn they are so I will be pulling them apart after I can find a repair manual. I'll probaly call the number on the manual Friday to see if they have a manual.

Anyone else have suggestions on service and repair manuals?

recreationtires.com has the 18" snow hoges you can use all the way around, very cheap.

Forgot about the dual throttle cable for the fronts, but you could do it for the rear.

Sometimes when you are heavier and trying to ride these quads, the front end wants to come up and the front does not get traction to turn, try leanig forward in the turns and see if the tires bite better.

The reving problem could be an air leak possibly.
Juat a thought.
