At a legal seminar I went to once (for new laws passed here to deal with an epidemic of leaky condos) the law professor said when we can't fix our own problems, some laws become a form of social engineering, forcing things on people that shouldn't necessarily need to be a law. The more kids that become statistics, the closer we get to that social engineering thing........ telling people what they can or can't do. It's a shame because you'd think this is something we can all control without laws being passed, but as usual, a relative handful of idiots destroy it for the vast majority of responsible people.

yep, that's brutal. the irony is that the fish lure probably looks like a fly, so why is junior trying to eat something that looks like a fly??It'd be different if the lure looked like a chocolate cupcake. Maybe Fear Factor should be the one being sued, for encouraging kids to eat bugs.... oops, their lawyer probably never thought of that. I smell another lawsuit coming

That is a terrible story, anytime a kid gets hurt it s bad, but when one is killed it is just tough to deal with. I was on a forum and I read a thread where this guy was bragging about how his 6 year old was clocked at 56 MPH, on an atv. These are the type of parens who threaten atving fr the rest of us responsible parents, who guide thier children responsibly. I started my 8yr old out on a Suzuki lt50, right size, right power, right features not only for our riding conditions, riders ability, but also for his parents peace of mind. This atv will top out at approximately 18 MPH, he rolled it the first week he had it, when he was doing approx. 10 MPH, and there was a hole under some soft dirt that was not visible. That scared him enough to drive more responsibly. Can you imagine what a wreck at 56 MPH would do to a 6 year old. I dont care what you say, there is not enough safety gear made to protect that little guy!!!!!!!!
It ruins my rides when we go out to our local riding spots and see little kids on daddie ATV...... "Look Ma no hands".....or legs cause they got severed when dads 600lb ATV rolled over on me!!!!!!
LET"S HAVE FUN IN A RESPONSIBLE WAY!!!!!!!!!!

No offense to the poster but I have to question the authenticity of this fishing lure story. I see numerious pages referring to a "whacky warning label" as attempting to ward off litagation but this story sounds more like a urban legend. ouch ouch ouch - my leg is getting longer...... lol

I can't find his "Legal Label" session online. I'll write to John to see if/when they will post it. If you want to verify this "fishing lure and re-labeling law" Give Me A Break story, you can certainly email John Stossel yourself. If wondering, his session also contained stupid label laws like Hair Dryers having a new label with "don't use while sleeping" and a bunch of other stupid laws. Stupid laws that were forced by people who did stupid things with the item.
Hope this helps verify how truthful my posting is...

whether it's true or not, my fave is the one about the guy who slipped on the warning label on one of the rungs on a ladder, and sued the manufacturer for the label being there!! How ironic!! LMAO!!
hey BSB, that's funny. either smack him, or throw him in the water to see if he'd make good shark bait.the swallowed lure may just be what snags that shark!

Who do we blame? Evolution for making us so fragile. I don't think the dad should be blamed.
He probably thought she was ready for the 250. A Polaris 250 isn't exactly a monster of a quad in the performance world. Yes it's 2 stroke but it's about as gutless a 2 stroke 250 (at least in stock form) as there is.
He answered the phone. Well I can't really blame him there. To think that turning away for 30 seconds is going to make a differance is a bit far fetched until it happens. Even if he hadn't answered, could he have stopped it?
I'd like to see a comparison between the 50's-70's families who bought horses or ponies for their kids (I bet there were discussions on weather Sue was ready for a 17 hand tall horse or should she stick with a Shetland Pony till she's 16, imagine the outrage over "The Black Stalion" movie!!! ) and parents today who buy ATV's for theirs...
Stinks that it happened and I do feel for the father. It could happen to alot of us.

I agree too, but I think in the old days it was considered a "freak accident", you grieved and you got on with your life. You didn't blame the saddle manufacturer, or the guy that sold you the horse or feed.you didn't start a movement to ban all youngsters from riding horses. Today it's considered an opportunity for a law suit, and NEVER your own fault or something you could possibly be to blame for, OR...god forbid anyone think this way.... a BLAMELESS tragedy.
