Default lt80 MX gearing

Ok I still can't seem to find the right setup on the little lt. Right now we're running a 12/22 combo. I have done work to both the front and rear clutch, reeds, uni-filter and lightly cleaned up the ports. I'm wondering if I would be better off going back to the stock pipe rather than the FMF now that I've completed the clutch work. It just doesn't seem to be pulling the R's I expected. I know Jack hates the pipe on a mod machine. Would you consider this to be more modded than stock?

by the way we're running a 16x6.5x8 rear tire.

I consider it to be more stock than modded. If you would see a real ported motor, you'd understand why I say that. No offence intended.
Try the stock pipe, don't hurt to try!
Now as for the gearing,I think that you may need taller gearing. Possibly a 13 or 14 front. A stock machine with or w/o the FMF seem to be able to handle the bigger front. With my motor and those tires, I would recommend 11/22 gearing as it pulls many more rpm's.
So what did you do to the front and rear clutchs?
It's not that I hate the pipe for a modded machine, it just didn't work.

The front clutch originally I removed 2 rollers but it didn't work very good. So I just drilled each roller out with a 5/16 bit (i think, been a while). Then I lightened each rear shoe to 160 grams each. Other than that I'm still searching. This winter I want you (Jack) to do this engine for me.

Sorry Jack I shouldn't have said you hate the pipe, it just doesn't work well with your mods.

Your LT sounds some what similar to ours. Except that ours is 80 over. I've shaved the head, not running a head gasket and have raised the ports some and blended it all together better. Does it take off good with the shoes that light? I cut ours down to 175 grams and was afraid I cut to much off for our set up. I am not very happy with the take off of ours, but once it gets going it will easly wind well beyond that of a stocker. I also changed the front bushing, and put a new spring in the rear, and it seemed to slow it down some. It winds very easy it just doen't seem to run quite as fast. (in reallity it does it just sounds like it should be running alot faster because of the rpm's)
We are running the stock gearing, (10/22) And with our 18x9.5 shreeders, I've had to shut my son down when he reached 45. (on my sportsmans speedo) I don't know how fast it actually goes, but thats plenty fast. I do know it is a pretty good race between our LT and my buddys Honda300 4x4.

Actually I think it helped his take off. But I don't think he's got near the top end speed yours has. What is your compression like? I'm not sure right off hand what his is right now. I really want to get someone to do the porting for me. Like I said I just lightly cleaned them up so they matched the cylinder. I know it's not pulling the R's it's capable of. I've got a 105 main in it and the plug looks really good. But then again it's my first year working with the Lt so I got a lot to learn.

Ok now I'm a little stumped. If you got the porting done with stock intake how are you able to run a smaller jet? You're running the stock carb too arent you? I just thought with pulling the extra air you would need to increase the jetting to match. I'm not doubting you at all Jack. It's just easier for me to tune my quad cuz I can ride it. With my son being a new rider he's still learning how to give me the feedback I need.

By the way anyone got a compression reading on their lt's?

voodoo.....

I have 2 LT's with Jack's motors, and one reads about 150# and the other reads about 175# of compression. This is tested warm with throttle full open! I am also running 4 stock rollers and 13/26 gearing. (14/26 on one of them)...

I've always heard that to make a 2 stroke rev you have to lean them out. With the oil in the gas, most people say you don't have the problems that you would with the 4 strokes. I went to a 95 main when ours was stock because I couldn't get the right color on the plug, but since then we are running rich so I will be going back down on main jets.

I checked our compression Saturday, cold it only showed 95lbs. I believe it is loosing some because of the lack of a head gasket. I had every intention of checking it after we rode awhile but didn't get that chance. I know its better when hot, but I may go back and put the head gasket back on. Ours is close to being done on the rebuilds, I am going to try boring it 1 more time and run the 105 bigbore piston. Right now I know ours has way to much ring end gap.which also is hurting our compression. It runs pretty good for being wore out junk, but every time my son shuts it off I have to wonder if its going to restart.

Racerdad,

How do you check compression? I use a threaded gauge from Mac tools in the spark plug hole, buzz the starter for a few seconds and get the reading. I'm confused with testing at "full open throttle"?? My readings have always been lower than what I thought they should be, so what am I doing wrong.
