Looking to upgrade, need advice
#1
Hi my 7yr old has been riding the Raptor 50 for 2yrs and its time to upgrade. We go in sand a lot and it doesnt barely move in the sand, it does terrible. So we need one that cruises in the sand. When we are just rode riding at Browns Camp its impossible for him to follow, being that it only goes 12 miles an hour. So we need something a little speedier, something that cruises in sand , and something that we can put wheel extenders on because he likes to corner fast. Thank for any info!!

My stock 100 did terrible in sand. It went pretty good on a flat surface. But the dunes I ride at, even to get to a "flat" part requires going over a few small hills. The quad would spin, don't get me wrong. But stuff I can make up from a dead stop, my kiddo would just digging holes so dad got to push! Frustrating!
It took a few mods to get it going like I wanted. I have a high compression head, race pipe, clutch kit, 20mm Keihin and a K&N. Last time out, it was taking me up some pretty decent dunes. Makes me wonder what it would do with reeds and a port & polish?
If you are on a budget, I'd at least get a pipe, vent the airbox, rejet the carb and get a clutch kit. I'd recommend a Polaris clone as they are cheap, fairly reliable and parts are available.
Good luck!

I'd recogmend a 2 stroke for the sand. You need good wheel spin to dis-place sand, and a 2 stroke will do it. Sand robs horsepower. There's lots of mini quads out ther that can fit that bill, Kasea, Eton, Suzuki, Polaris. Etc. Most are auto clutches, IE: gas n go. With a few mods, pipe, clutches, air box Etc, you can get them moving faster if need be.

I think the eton has better features like the adjustable cdi and rear hydraulic brake, and it's a little cheaper.

lots of used LT80s around, they're both good (Etons and lts). you definitely need paddles, which i know they make for the LT80. and they have wheel extenders for the LT80. fishslab lives in Eugene and rides the dunes. he told me he preferred the eton a little over the LT80.

I've got both an Eton and an LT80. Both are great with paddles. I do prefer the Eton for cost , upgrades ,and equipment. The LT is a solid little machine though. I would take either. The type of paddle is just as important. I am sold on the Skat trak Gliders for these things. I tried others and they are mediocre at best. It's worth the extra coin to get the Skat Traks. Note: The Eton was kind of a dog until I got a pipe and did some other mods. The LT is still basicly stock with restrictors removed and does great.

As much as I love 4-strokes, 2-strokes rule the dunes. All about HP and weight.
Tain't no way a stock trx90 would make it some of our dunes, either. And they are considered small by most. Even a stock 250ex struggles.

I have to agree. (And I live in dune-less Ohio!)
