I got my son a trx 90 on Easter 2003. He needed more power, so I got a big gun pipe and put a big bore kit on it (106 cc). By Easter 2004, he had outgrown it. When he came back from 2 months in the midwest this summer, he was almost as big as me (he is 5'3", 125 lbs). He tried out my Blaster, but did not like working the clutch and the constant shifting to keep it in the power band, so I got him a 250 ex. He loves it!!!
I say you want quadding to be a fun, family activity so that your little darlings don't start going off and doing something stupid. Find out what the child likes to ride, what frame fits him/her, what kind of tranny fits the kid's style and then do it! They'll love ya and love riding with you. And that is what it is all about.

My eldest son was 6'3" when he turned 16 and we got him a blaster...he had a blast.. but he will be the first to admit that no reverse sucked... espcially when dad would pull up, hit reverse and turn around while he had to get off, pick it up and turn it around manually... not to mention the kicking and kicking and kicking to get it started... get electric start and reverse.. and disc brakes on the front at least.
the speed issue is another one of those deals where you are damned if you do, damned if you don't.... you make the call on that one. Do what you can feel comfortable with knowing that he will not always be under your direct view at this age....
You can't find another bike that will give as much bang for the buck as a Blaster will...
