Default water proofing

my sons alpha sport 50 sputters when he hits water at medium speeds,it clears up after 30 seconds or so, if you play with the throttle. i have sealed his air box well, its not getting wet. is there a vent hose possibly staying under water just long enough to make it sputter? what else should i check?he rarely sees water over 4 inches.thanks

It could be electrical so check those connections if you think any of them are the problem then try using some silicone sealer and see if that helps.

Could also be the spark plug cap not sealing on the plug. Pretty easy to check too, just fire it up and pour water over the plug. Had this problem with my xr75 10-12 yrs ago, took a while to figure out too.

For us, I often start our engines and let them idle until low heat. Then, take a garden hose and spray ALL its wiring. Starting from the bottom of the wiring and slowly working my way upwards. When its engine starts to sputter or its electrical item becomes flacky (re: light wiring), I found a potential problem. My auto machanic also does this trick to check for faulty spark plug wiring as well.

Hope this troubleshooting trick helps others too.

Make sure you coat teh whole thing with wd-40 to eliminate the moisture when you are done troubleshooting.. It might be something as simple as a bad or corroded ground too.
