'05 Eton Viper 90 Performance
I have both of my boys on '05 eton Viper 90's. So far they have been great little quads. We usually go to Ocotillo Wells (fairly hard pack desert riding-very little sand) and the Vipers do great. But this weekend we went out to the dunes in Glamis. We left one bike with stock tires at 2 psi, and the other quad with Kenda Sand Geko tires. To my surprise, the knobbies faired far better. In fact, we ended up pulling the paddle type tires off and going with knobbies on both quads. The stock unit just could not rev up to turn the paddles.
It just feels like there is something holding these little bikes back. I have found the "adjustable CDI box" under the front cover. It has a rotating arrow that moves to positions 0 thru 7. The stock setting was "3" I have tried 4,5,6, AND 7. We can't feel any difference. The throttle stop screw is backed out to allow for full throttle travel. Is there some way I can wake this thing up????? They run great, but they really feel like they are being factory corked. What can I do to wake these up on a budget?
I've searched and seen a few tuner sites to try, but I am looking to hear some real world success stories from some of the other parents out there.
Thanks!

I was having some problems with my son's '05 Eton 90r Viper. The thing just seemed like it did not have any top end. Like you I had adjusted the CDI box but found it did not help, on the lower settings it slowed it down more but on the higher settings it just didn't seem to make a difference. I had cleaned the air filter and cvt filter and was getting ready to tear apart the carb when "Raptorlegs" sent the advice below. WOW what a difference.... that little bike really runs. The spark arrestor was so plugged up it just couldn't run at top end speed. I am going to order a spare spark arrestor so while one is soaking / cleaning he can still ride. I am trying to find out if he can just run without it but I have not gotten a answer yet?? anyone have any idea on this.
Hope this helps if it does another big kudo to the RAPTORLEGS

Assuming it has one, clean your spark arrestor and see if that helps.

If I was on a budget, I'd start out by finding someone to mill the head (to increase compression), put 2 1" vents in the airbox and get the jetting correct. MAYBE some slightly lighter rollers in the front variator (or gear down). Should be able to do all this for under $75 and have a noticeable increase. You can buy a race head for like $125 or so.
Then add a good pipe and a larger carb w/K&N or Uni when you can afford it. These items are really meant to work together though (and I can't even begin to explain the difference they made on mine!). You may just want to bite the bullet. Painful, but the results will put a smile on your face.
I always advise people to call a builder. They can help you plan ahead so your mods compliment each other. The most helpful to me has been Billy Holt at WRH Racing. Lot of people swear by Hetrick Racing as well.
Bedrock, I'm glad I could help! That makes my day!

I really liked the way Hetrick puts together the kits. My only worry with Hetrick is that I don't want to give up my electric start. I don't mind mixing fuel, but the electric start is great for the kids. I'm still waiting to hear back from WRH and Hetrick. I sent e-mails to both companies early in the week but have not heard back yet. What company are you with???

I rigged a mount and moved my battery to above the rear left wheel for about $5. With WRH's new pipe, my understaning is you don't have to relocate it.

Hey Bedrock, I have to admit, I really blew off your suggestion to check the spark arrestor. But I just got through pulling the spark arrestor. It was not plugged. It did have a very small amount of packing stuck in it. And after seeing it, I can see your point. This thing could get plugged solid in a very, very short period of time. Thanks for the tip.
I am waiting to hear back from Madracing and WRH. I think I'm going to "bite the bullet" and do the pipe/airfilter/clutch thing.
When it's done, I'll post pictures of my grin.

wrh and hetrick both were at the nationals in texas this past week, that is why you got no response. get the wrh pipe, clutch kit, no rev cdi and high compression head and it will put a big smile on his face. you can relocate the battery to keep the electric start, not sure if billy has any on the special viper pipes in stock right now. his other pipe will work if you relocate the battery and make an adjustment to your floor boards. the vipers have a pipe that goes from one side to the other under the engine, this gets in the way when you put an aftermarket pipe on them. the pipe can be notched for clearance, this is what i did untill i got my nerf bars. you will have others that say they have a bolt on pipe for the eton that requires no modifications but these pipes are no better than stock. to get the performance gain from a pipe it must have a expansion chamber which your stock pipe does not have, call billy at wrh, 251-675-9906
