Thanks for all the good replies. And some of the bad ones were at least funny to read. I don't have a grandfather, so I come here for that type of devils advocate.

I bought him a 2003 Chinese Knock-Off of the Polaris 50. It was owned by a guy in the next town over with way too many toys. His personal mechanic showed me the bike, and it looked like it was brand new. Got it for half the price of a new Polaris, so that make it great. My son is able to fit very well, and the brakes were easy to reach and use. It has the keyfob kill switch, so that makes it nice for safety.

It even was orange, the same color as my truck, so my son loved it the minute he saw it.

Well good.. sounds like the color was the clincher... I am glad to hear that he is able to work the controls. That is half the battle and what worried me the most. Keep it throttled back for a while until he gets his "quad legs" under him... and make sure you pay close attention to his riding. Right now, the hardest thing you will be dealing with is controlling his enthusiasm... continue to stress responsible riding in his training.

The remote kill is the best feature of this one. I'll be trying it out this weekend.

OK, I tried it out. Ran good for a few minutes, then started bogging down when it got hot. Top speed was 15mph. We'll try it at 10mph for a little while and see how he does. I'll have to tune it when it gets hot and see if I can get rid of the bog.

Sounds like you need to adjust the carb... It is getting hot... and causing the bog.... Don't push it too hard or you might be seizing the motor

Could be jetted a little rich. Next time you get it warmed up, turn the fuel switch off and see if performance improves as it runs out of fuel.
Or you might try it with the snorkle out too. Also, check to see if it has a spark arrestor and if so, clean it. Add fresh fuel.

Good luck!

Does it still have the stock spark plug? Only reason I ask is I have been sent a pm by Jimmi about his yamoto 150 problems. Same basic situation and it turned out to be the stock chinese spark plug was not working when it got hot. Strange but true.

It was a little rich. Only by about 45 degrees on the needle. Its running great now. Best decision I've made in a a few years. Fast enough for him, and not that slow for the pack.

Both of my boys used our suzuki lt 50 and it is still going strong.I cant even begin to calculate the hours on that quad! I'll admit that from a stop its not too thrilling on the takeoff but it goes really well once its moving. The thing is tough the suspension is great and when the kid is done with it ,it really holds its value for resale. We ride it in the woods and hit the rock pits often. The quad goes through mud over logs pretty much where ever we want.Sure I have to push him to get going up big hills "only if he did not get a run" but there seems like a lot of ways to get more power if ya need to.Just read the forums on the lt50 and there are a lot of things people say they have done to pump it up.CT makes a killer pipe for it. I would recomend the lt50 to anyone for woods rideing, its bullet proof and has great resale also.
