Default Suzuki lt50 question

Hi guys,

Looked around and haven't been able to find an answer for this as of yet.

My son in law had the head polished on my grandson's 04 lt50. He had taken the head and cylinder off and the local machine shop did it for him. I'll have to admit he is real handy and knows his way around these things a lot more then I do. But after he got everything all put back together, the little thing smokes like a banchee. To the point where the plug is oil fouled about about 15 mins riding. He has checked everything that he did and is pretty confident that he got things right.

Until I asked him about the rings. At that point, he wasn't quite sure.

Can this be a problem if they aren't positioned correctly ??

Or any other suggestions, comments always welcome.

If the rings aren't positioned correctly, you will get blow by. That is probably what is causing the smoke. Especially if he didn't remember setting the rings with the slots opposite.

Default Suzuki lt50 question

Thanks ramtech.

This is what I suspected from past days of rebuilding car engines, but being small engine handicapped myself,
I thought I would ask those with more experience.

Anyone have any idea on the correct positioning in relation to the piston?? Or any resources to find the answer ??

I'll keep looking myself too.

Thanks again.

I would think a clymers or other service manual would have the info..check out the local library, in the 629 area of non fiction. If not ebay and other places on the web have them. It might even be worth a trip to the dealer...if the guys in back arent real busy, they could look up the info for you too.

Check to see that the rings line up with the pins on the piston. On the second (bottom) grove, there should be a tension spring under the ring. Also what kind of smoke is it? I had the trans oil seal go out on my 03 Lt50. It smoked like crazy. Pull the cylinder off and check down by the crank. If it is wet with trans oil, then you must split the cases to replace the seal. Not a fun job. Good luck.

It is blueish smoke. I'd say 99% sure that its burning oil. Will keep the other in mind, just in case. He is taking it apart today
if the weather holds.

Does the lt50 have oil injection? I had the same sort of problem on my boy's LT80. The injection was not working right. I removed the auto injection and mix the gas myself. No more problems! Just somthing to look at.

I think he is pulling the head right now. He is going to check the rings as I suggested and if he doesn't find
a problem there, I believe that he intends to discconect the oil injection and go to premix....and see how that
goes.

He was able to get the manual from a local shop, so he has that on hand to.

Well, we got the head off and it looked OK, rings seemed OK.

Put it all back together and disconnected the oil injection system.
The smoking problem is STILL really bad running 32:1 on the mixture.
He tore it back down again today and discovered quite a bit of oil in the crankcase.
Described as thicker consistency then the 2 stroke oil. Blown seals ?? Cracked case ??

Any ideas welcome.
