Default Green sticker legal 50's?

Here is another tid bit for you. Just ask the dealer not to sticker it.
Motors under 50cc do not have to be registered in California.
All they have to do is sign the MSO over to you and you are good to go.

Yes, its in the DMV dealer handbook.

Will they still be able to get into state off road riding areas?

I have 2 50's that would be red if I stickered them. I have not been
stopped in 2 years. Its right in the DMV book that they do not need to
be registered.

Its one of those things though that most dealers just process
everyone the same way as a matter of process.

Default Green sticker legal 50's?

badvox,

Do you think most Rangers know about 50cc engines and under not needing to be registered?

The reason why I ask, is when I bought my sons 2002 yz125 in 2004 we took it out the first day we got it. Now it did not have a spark arrester on it so we stopped off at Cycle Gear and bought a Sparky. We got to Gorman paid our admission fee and found a place to park. Now this bike originally received a RED Sticker (it is Green now). He got ready and went riding. He wasn't out for more than 3 minutes when he got pulled over by a Ranger. By the way we where riding in Green sticker Season only. The Ranger did not even look for a sticker he went right for the VIN#, he did not care if it had a sticker on it or not. He checked for a spark arrester and then the Ranger sent my son on his way. I watched the whole thing from 100 yards away from where we were parked. My son rode back to us and told us what happened. What do you think would happen if one of these red sticker quads got pulled over by a Ranger? Also why does CARB make the Manufacturers even go through the process to RED Sticker or Green Sticker the quads in the first place? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense if one agency does not conform to the other. I don't doubt you at all about the DMV not needing the 50cc engines to be registered. It's just the confusing mess that the DMV makes for the registration and sticker process for the 50cc quads/bikes.

Also has anyone ever been ticked for riding in green sticker season with a red sticker quad or bike? What kind of fine did you have to pay if any?

Default Green sticker legal 50's?

Anyone have an Internet link to the CA DMV dealer handbook that covers this 50cc issue? I'd love to find out more about it as I've yet to register my son's KFX50. If there's no need, then I won't do it at all...

smb05 has a very good point. There was an article posted a long while back about stickers and such.
It was basically an interview with a Ranger and he was quoted as saying they do not go by stickers
because tada DMV sucks!! LOL

As to the dealer handbook... I dunno if its online or not. I have a copy here let me see if
I can get a good enough scan and I'll post it.

At the very bottom. They do not register mini blah blah blah
because of the displacement which in the vehicle code is listed
as under 50cc

Copied From The Bottom of the Page of the DMV Registration Handbook:

1.150 Miniature Motorcycles
The department does not register vehicles known as mini choppers, pocket bikes, etc.
These vehicles:
• Do not meet the definition of a motorized scooter because of their speed
(VC §406) and engine displacement (VC §405).
• Do not meet equipment safety standards.
• Cannot be registered pursuant to VC §4751d.
Please advise your customers that these vehicles cannot be registered and cannot be
operated on a public street.

This only pertains to Miniature Motorcycles & Pocket Bikes. I do not think ATV's are included, it is mainly referencing Public Streets and does not mention anything about Off Road Vehicles.

The above mentioned Vehicle codes refer to motor driven cycles, not off road vehicles, refer to the following links for more info.

Vehicle Code: VC §405 = Motor Driven Cycle
Vehicle Code: VC §406 = Motorized Bicycle
Vehicle Code: VC §4751d = Grounds Permitting Refusal

Of course, you do not need to register any atv in Ca. you just can't transport them on a public roadway or use them at a OHV park. If you want to be able to use the atv's "legally" at an OHV park, they need to be registered in the State of California.
