Default yamaha raptor 80 wont turn over

Just bought a 02 yamaha raptor 80 for sons first atv. I know how most feel about it, but not to race, just for a big 6 year old to learn on and room to grow...

Anyway, bike had been sitting for about 2 years. Got it from a guy I trust, who said it was running fine when parked (moved and daughter lost interest). Bike is really clean and looks like new. Does not seem to have been rode hard at all, but looks can be deceiving I know.

I put a new battery in it, and wont turn over, just click. Took starter off, and it is fine, but motor is locked up. Tried to put it in gear and turn motor, but will not turn over, just drags rear tires... its stuck. In neutral, roles fine. Pulled plug, and it looked ok. Oil looks ok. Looks like exhaust valve is open, from what I can see with flashlight in plug hole.

What do you think? What to try. Could moisture have gotten into motor through valve last time running, and stuff rusted and stuck? What is best way to try to turn motor over?

I squirted some WD40 in it and put plug back in, and its sitting. Really hate to start pulling motor apart without knowing its bad.

thanks in advance for the help!

Ken

Does you neutral light come on?

Do you get any response by hold in the clutch?

what i'd would be to remove the flywheel cover, then try to rotate the crankshaft using a hand or a socket and a rachet. if it doesn't move then it's pretty sure engine damage, if it moves then something in the transmission- clutch area

thanks for the help so far...

Yes the neutral light does come on in neutral, and off in gear, as it should.

The bike is a three speed automatic clutch, so no hand clutch.

Any more help?

Would love to hear from someone who has worked on one of these.

Thanks again!

it is a cluthless shift but there is a sensor hooked to the clutch plates. that why I ask about the neutral light.

My son will be in neutral but the light will not register and his acts the same way. if he hold in the clutch lever it starts right up

tkbayes,

Thanks for the help. I am traveling with work so will be a few days before I am home to try it.

I want to make sure I understand you. Are you saying that I must hold in a brake lever? As there is no clutch lever... if so, which side needs to be pulled in to start it?

Does the starter make a noise if he hits the start button without the lever pulled in?

I would be thrilled to find out this is the problem.

Thanks again.

He has a Lever on the left side of his 2003 Raptor 80 that he pulls in when it will not start.

When his does not start there is no noise

Been traveling with work, be home this weekend, and see if holding levers will do anything. Hope so!

I have tried to find books or notes on web to tell what kind of starting safety this thing has, with no luck.

Anyone else out there know if the starting sequence of pulling in handle has a mechanical lock to motor involved?

Thanks,

Ken

Thats the rear brake?how does the rear brake do anything for starting? You need to pull the left side cover off, you'll find your cam chain sproket in there, with the bike in neutral put the correct size socket on the hex and you motor should turn over fairly easy,if not something is siezed or binding, theres also an inspection cover for your valves at the top of the head, you might take a flashlight and take a peek in there while your trying to turn it over,if it does turn over then you could try jumping the starter to by pass the neutral safty swiththese motors are really easy to break down and put back together start at the top and work your way down
