Shaft. Chain drives have the potential to yield all sorts of problems, not to mention the fact that you can't get a 4x4 chain drive atv.

Personally, I like shaft drive the best. Especially for mud/crud and sand riding conditions. Being sealed, they are maintenance free (other then checking oil levels). My AC 500i has shaft drive and its been great.

On the negative side.... With chains, one can install a HD chain. One can install different size sprockets (for slight gearing change) and with chains/sprockets, one can see their "wear" conditions. But with a sealed shaft unit, there would be much lower "wear" because its gears don't get covered in mud.

.

The full size polaris scramblers 4X4s used to use a front chain drive for the 4X4.I'm not sure if they still do or not but its not much of an issue for mini's since they aren't four wheel drive. The shaft drive is better for ground clearance and easy maintenance. The chain drive is good for sport quads if you need to change gearing.

Considering purchasing a 2006 e-ton 90 viper. How has your 04 held up? Would you purchase another? Any advice would be appreciated.
