Default polaris stator

my sportsman 90 is not getting any spark to the plug , and i've about convinced myself, by following spike99's detailed instruction, that my stator is bad. so i called my dealer and talked to them about it; he said since i already have it off, bring it in and he would test it. well, i took the stator and also my coil. dealer said stator war good, but coil was bad. my question is, doesnt the stator and also coil need to be grounded to do these tests? .

To test the ohms readings on the stator bobins, the dealer would touch the black probe of the digital ohms tool on the stator's steel assembly. Red probe on the stator output wires. Thus, getting a good ground on the stator assembly steel casing - instead of indirect grounding on the mini's steel frame. To test the external coil, the dealer would use a digital ohms meter and for functional test, use a special test machine.

If your dealer is stating the stator bobins (re: entire stator assembly is good) and your external coil is shot, then be thankful. Replacing an external coil is much less expensive compared to replacing the stator assembly.

If your stator bobins or external coil blows, it most often is caused from bad or weak ground. (assuming the stator bobins aren't mud/crud over loaded over time). As a suggestion, install a thick wire (say 10 guage) from the "-" battery post to the frame. Yes, double ground wire off the battery. Also install a thick ground wire from the frame to the engine. I've been told many times the "install" of these additional ground wires will reduce Stator bobin and External Coil blow outs. Hope this helps as well....

after talking to dealer #1, i took my stator to dealer #2. he didnt even have to test it, he took one look and showed me where one of the wires was almost burnt in two. he sold me a used stator for $40 and that fixed it. btw, there was nothing wrong with my old coil, it still works fine. i did add the extra grounds, spike, thanks for all great info.

Glad we can help. Sounds like Dealer #1 of off your Christmas list and Dealer # 2 is near the top of your Christmas list (sort of speaking). Glad to hear your Dealer # 2 is the main person who got it fixed for you.

If wondering, I won't visit my original dealer again. After some time, I realized his service stunk as well. We're moved onto much better dealers.
