Chinese ATV - no spark. Common problem?
#11
BiggusBlockus, I had the same problem with my sons Coolster 110cc. The harness plugs in the wire harness are crap and don't make a solid connection. After bouncing around awhile, my sons quad would start backfiring and eventually stall due to a loose pin connection in one of the plugs. I took all of the harness plugs apart and tweaked the pins in the connectors to make a connection with some resistance when plugging them together. This fixed his random stalling/backfiring.

I just bought two Zhe Jiang TAOTAO Industries ATA 250-D quads. Nice looking.... no instructions whatsoever for assembly, so if you don't know what you are doing, find someone who does. Both units are assembled now and ready to go, but neither one starts. Lights work, batteries are fine, fuel lines are all connected, wires all appear tightly connected. Engines turn over nicely... they just don't start. Switches are all in the correct position. Tried using Engine starting fluid, but no results. I suspect its not just a loose wire or a bad spark plug, because both units have the exact same problem. Is 'first-time' starting these units a big problem? Any suggestions?

I have a TAO TAO 150 and it started just fine. Just need to make sure that the kill switch is in the right position. On this unit you have to center the kill switch by pushing "in" on the kill switch button. It may look centered but could still be in the "off" position if you don't push it in. Also make sure that the fuel shutoff valve is open. I did not even know ours had one, I even looked around for one when we got the unit and did not find one. Had a problem with fuel getting in with the oil so I looked around again and found it right at the bottom of the tank. Small little booger. Ours is in the off position when the handle is parallel to the ground and open if straight up and down. Hope this helps. ghcoe.

I am not getting a spark at my spark plug.

I have 10 total scooters:

so I can freely swap parts. I switched out the CDI:

No luck. When I disconnect these wires to check voltage:

they are all grounded. Should that be? The voltage coming out is barely enough to light my 12v bulb in my voltage tester:

What should I do now?

I found the problem:

The ground wire connecting to Kill switch had a few wires not connected. It tricked me, because the volt meter was saying that it was running ground through wire. I guess not enough...
I had switched out CDI, Starter Switch, and Kill Switch, but not these connecting wires:WOW. What a joke. I tore through the whole carb. Adjusted Valves . Removed fuel petcock and replaced with manual valve. ALL for nothing. I hate electrical...
Now, the scooter will still not start. This is too funny.
It is getting spark from CDI with BLk/White wire connected. The gas is brand new from replacing petcock.

My son has a coolster 110 cc (I think it is a 3050B model) and we let it sit for a while and now it won't start. This forum has helped me to get an idea on what to look at first. My question is how to check if I am getting a spark. Is it as simple as pulling the plug, reattaching plug wire and trying to start while looking at the plug? If that is the case then I don't have spark. I already tried putting in a new NGK plug.
It sounds like my next step is to check all electrical wiring if I don't have a spark. yamoto150owner says if I don't find anything I "try disconnecting the (1) black and white from the cdi and try starting it. if it starts that means that there is something wrong with the kill switches."
