I can think of a couple of places that the shaft shaft could have problems :
- is the shifter binding against the engine stator cover ? if so then try loosing the shifter and moving it a little away from the cover.
- did the shifter take a hit that would have caused the shift shaft to be slightly bent and binding against the stator cover ?
- remove the stator cover and check to see if the bearing trust or push lever on the shift shaft are binding. also there is one engine
oil seal and a dirt/water seal on the stator cover that could possibly bind up the shaft.
- remove the clutch basket engine cover on the opposite side of the motor. this will give you access
to the other end of the shift shaft that has the mechanism that changes gears. there are a couple of springs on it. see if anything is binding the springs or the fork mechanism that rides in the shift cam assembly.
the shift shaft is spring loaded so that it returns to its "regular" position, if its not doing then either the spring is bad or the shaft is bound up.
I have replaced shift shafts before and the worst part is getting off the clutch basket.
