There are a bunch of changes you can do to the Raptor 50 to improve performance.

1 - change carburator slider to Raptor 80 version ($20).
2 - change throttle lever to Raptor 80 version ($10).
3 - change to higher rev CDI (around $100 but you might get one used or new
on ebay for less)

(changes 1, 2 and 3 will give the greatest speed and power increase)

4 - change main jetting to #80 (some power improvement, $10)
5 - add after market exhaust (adds a little horse power, but expensive,
there is a power tip on ebay ($30) that doesn't cost as much and may
help some)

6 - perform clutch ball removal modification. (helps with starting off, $10).
7 - add wheel spacers for stability. (highly recommend if 1,2, amd 3 are done)
8 - add offset rims and after market tires for better handling/stability ($400)
9 - add nerf bars for safety ($100)
10 - add headlight for night riding ($150)

pick your poison.

do a search for Raptor 50 under this sub-forum and look for

04-05 Yamaha Raptor 50 and a couple of other discusions for more detail

The Raptor 50 is slow by design... The dealer wasn't far off in his response. Selling a 50 can be easier than you think. They keep their resale quite well actually, and if your son is ready for an upgrade and his size dictates a larger machine is needed, it should be considered.

I agree w/dragginbutt.
Please check out the DRR quads. Fast out of the box!
I feel you will sink a bunch-o-money on the raptor 50 and still not come close to what you want to achieve (a kid with a big smile).

To many design limitations on the old 50. You could probably sell that one and buy a larger used one for less than $500.00 total investment. That is provided your little one is big/mature enough for more power and a larger chassis. BTW, I would probably stay away from the Raptor 80 too. There are plenty of stock quads out there that are going to keep your kid happier, longer.
