Help!! Rear chain SLIPS OFF SPROCKET!! 250cc atv
#12
hey bimmerman! I have two of the same 4-wheelers you have. tao -tao is the type? i have the same problem. mostly when i am turning hard left. i see the chain go from tight to loose. i have checked all bolts. they seem tight. i thought about putting a chain tensioner on this. if i do any idea which one will fit? i am looking hard at a concentric from hdp. anyone done this? also the batteries on these things just spill the acid out after doing wheelies. anyone have a recomendation on battery type to get?

The factory Taotao chain is junk and will never stay adjusted due to stretch and poor quality steel used in the chain. You need a 428H heavy duty chain and the front sprocket is not perfectly lined up with the rear sprocket due the way the motor is mounted so you have to offset the rear end adjustment to get the sprockets to line up properly. After installing the new KMC 428H chain and getting the sprockets properly aligned the chain on my Taotao 250 D is staying adjusted and does not fall off anymore.

Before when the old factory chain was installed and the sprockets were not aligned, yes it did seem when you turned or did donuts it would get looser and sometimes even fall off. I found this to be caused by the sprockets did not line up perfectly AND the factory chain is crap and would stretch when under stress like turning or doing donuts etc. although I do not ride it hard everyday I did test it after the new 428H chain was installed by crossing ditches along with climbing a few rocks and doing donuts like before to see if it would make the chain loose and it did not, it now stays adjusted like it should with normal maintenance.

thanks for the link. they have did and some other brand chain. i am going with the did chain. do you know if chains come with master links these days? been decades since i bought a chain. oh and i am getting the 118 link chain with the 13 tooth sprocket like you did. good idea on the 13 tooth.

one more thing i found today. i tore apart the swing arm. i noticed the pivot bolt was bent. not much but probably enough to throw off the alignment. ever replace this with a stronger bolt? i am planning on going to the hardware store to see if they have a harder bolt. this one looks like it was made from potted metal.
