Default LT80 CARB QUESTION

I've spent a few hours wandering through the topics and couldn't find the answer. I'm sorry if I'm repeating a past topic. Thanks in advance

I just recently dusted off a 1988 LT80. Pulled the carb and cleaned thoroughly. Got running and rode for a few hours around the house. The next day I couldn't get it started. I have great spark, and I know its getting fuel because the plug is drenched. I have tried with and without the Air filter on. If I back out the Air screw it will start but then stall when I hit the gas. Its real frustrating because I had it running.

Also in the carb on the jets is a rubber ring that sits over the jet inlets. Mine is a bit dry rotted and doesn't fit snug, is it necessary or even needed??? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes by all means replace the rubber ring its there for a perpose , its in there to seal the jet for the correct air / fuel mix ; and i would also clean and reoil the air filter while you're at it !

I would also suggest since its sit up long enough to gather dust that you do a complete service of all the fluids , engine / tranny crankcase oil , Differical and add some Sea Foam to your fuel you can get it at most all Auto Parts Store and most local Walmart Super Centers ; it not only cleans the fuel system but it keeps the combustion chamber free of exccess carbon deposits !

You don't have to use it in every tank of fuel , but when i know my atv , lawn and garden equipment and my automobiles sit up for a month of use ; i hope this helps and welcome to the forums !......

Default LT80 CARB QUESTION

Thanks for the reply. The Air filter is brand new and oiled. I think my problem may be the fuel ****. Leaving it in the PRI position for too long may have flooded it.

Sea Foam? Fuel additive? Is it like Stabil?

Thanks for the help. If the plug is super wet and I have good spark, is it a good assumption that the carb is working some what properly, not necessarily 100% but working. What kills me is the thing was running great for a few hours. I did have the fuel **** in the on position when it was running.

Welcome to the forums.
I agree 100% on the fuel additive.
No the carb is not working properly IMO.
I feel that you need to pull the carb again. Remove and clean the jets along with removing the float needle and seat. Fuel is getting past your float needle. There can be a cpl reasons that is happening but from the story, I feel that something has gotten into the needle/seat area. Right or wrong, it needs to be checked.
To save alot of grief, you should consider going to the autozone for a 3 dollar on/off valve.
Remove the plug and let dry out. Then full throttle and turn over till it starts. It needs to "clean out" so to speak...remember telling your dad that his car needed that when you were 16??
You can leave that rotted rubber boot out.

Default LT80 CARB QUESTION

LT80, thanks for the reply. I've spent some time reading your expert analysis. Thanks.

Anyway I have ordered a carb rebuild kit and will have it tomorrow. I will pick up a fuel shut off valve from Auto Zone. I will give it a shot and report back with some results.

I also just figured out that the machine was manufactured in 1986 which makes it an 87. First model heh? Any bugs in the first model?

Default LT80 CARB QUESTION

LT80 don't forget that the petcock has a rubber ' O'Ring ' and a wire filter screen ttat can get stopped up and leak through the petcock when they go bad , in part i agree with you ttat a new cut off valve would help if the tank petcock in bad ; but they need to be checked out for fuel flow and or leak !

It would be even better to install a clear inline fuel filter between the fuel hose between the valve petcock and the carb , you can check at a glance if you get trash or water in your fuel ; and the Sea Foam is more than a fuel additive it will clean and help keep the fuel system clean , fresh longer , has a water drying agent ; and it also cleans the combustion chamber of exccessive carbon deopsits that can gum up the valve train and cause sticky rings !

So my suggestion remains the same , Sea Foam has been on the market since 1942 and still carries a money back satifaction guarrantee ; very few products make this claim and i have used it going on 4 years so i know it works !

I really hope this helps , and you get it going ; good luck with the quad !........

Default LT80 CARB QUESTION

Thanks Willie,
I just made a note to myself to pickup the Sea Foam when I'm at Auotzone. I also have some clear fuel line and fuel filter that I can try. I'm siked to get the thing running. I teased my 6 yr old the other day when I had it running. He can't wait to get on it again.

Thanks a lot for all the replys. I'll report back tomorrow with some results.

Default LT80 CARB QUESTION

It's a piece-o-rubber that has little to no purpose except to get crushed during installation of the float bowl and block the jets.
I never put them back in.
