Default Installing fuel filter on 02 LT-A50

I want to add a fuel filter to my boys LT-A50. Picked one up at the store, but can't find any room on the quad between the petcock and carb. Any ideas or tips on where to position it?

I had not thought about adding one to my boys 50, but I am working on it right now so I will keep this thought in mind and see if I can come up with an idea. Had to put him on some new rear brake shoes, when it would crank it would take off, right out of your hands. Tried to get a new main jet (was going to try a 65) while I was at the dealer, but the parts man told me I had to bring the old one in first so he could do a correct match.

those carbs are tiny...and the freakin jets are the size of a hair, so any crap that comes through the tank will definitely clog up something. I think they operate the same as my Eiger, so the vent tube on that tank is bound to pull in some seed or something riding around our property. I'm sure a new fuel hose can be made to accomodate the fuel filter, but I wasn't sure if adding fuel line distance or curls would screw up the vacuum it needs to pull the fuel through. Anyhow, keep me posted if you see a gap to fit a filter in. As far as your brakes, were you wore down with no adjustment left? How long did that take to happen? Or are you dealing with a high idle like I did...once I took the idle speed down and adjusted the pilot mixture (I added back in restrictors for my boy when I bought it from a buddy, so I had to adjust the mixture), it finally settled down.

My boy got it new for Christmas in 2002, and these were the orignal shoes. They had stopped working a couple of years ago and I repositioned the arm to get a little more use out of them. They held up good until my boy found a new mud hole the other week, and went through it several times. Any how the shoes were worn to the point that they would no longer catch the drum hard enough to stop it. We have not had any problem with fuel issues and my boy rides his alot and it has been to and through alot of places it was not intended for. The top speed is good for him (around 20) but it needs some more low end power, I am hoping I can get this from installing a larger main jet, I have allready removed all restrictors and mod. to air box. I read some where that shaving the head by about .045 would give a nice boost in power, but I want to try a new jet befor I do that. Do you know how to read a spark plug? This bike still has the orignal plug in it, and I know with changeing the jet I will need to play with the mixture, but I have never done any carb mods. before.

I've only done carb mods on my Eiger (except for taking the LT-A50 back to factory defaults), and I've never had too much luck with the spark plug "drop" testing. The way I could tell was by simple sound (backfires and gurgling) and smell (too rich). Anyhow, I've used this site before when rejetting my carb on the Eiger...it will let you know what to tweek and where to get peak performance. Also, if you look up the thread with WAATV involved, he has good info on the LT-A50 as far as what jet sizes to use. Unfortunately, short of removing the restrictors (both washers and 2nd pilot jet), opening up the exhaust (by removing the tip and spark arrestor) and intake (airbox mods) and bumping up the mainjet, there isn't much else left....and it looks like you've done most of them.

I have done all of those but the main jet. I might get chance to work on it tomorrow if it rains, and I cant go hunting. Had any luck with your fuel filter install? If I do work on it tomorrow I will be looking at options.

How do you like your eiger with the manual trans? A buddy of mine had one that was auto, until it was stollen. I rode it one time and wasnt to impressed, but all I have ever owned were manual so I guess it would take some getting used to. I remember reading an article about the manual Eiger being kind of sporty, just curious for your opinion.

The Eiger is my first ATV. I did a ton of research before purchasing and considered all the major brands (Honda, Yamaha, Polaris and Arctic Cat) that were in the price range I wanted. I have approx 8acres to ride on daily with a 0.5mile track on it. I wanted something sporty (which is why I went with the manual), but I needed something to plow and tow a trailer around (hence the Ute). After doing the mods, the Eiger can really get up and go... a ton of power and tops out around 58mph. I run the trails with a 400 Polaris Sportsman with IRS and Auto (which I must say is a confortable cruising bike); the Eiger can handle run the course much faster due to the single swing-arm and manual...something about being able to get to the gear of choice coming out of corners instead of having to wait for the auto to choose. I'm sure an auto is much less work when plowing, but I wouldn't trade the manual and loose the gear choice capability. All-in-all, I think the Eiger is a nice bike (maybe a little underpowered for the 400 class, considering it is only a 376cc I think)...very mechanically designed with minimal bells and whisles to have something go wrong with...I like having a bike that I can fix everything on and don't have to worry about an "electrical bug" showing it face in readouts, 4X4 selection, indicators, etc. Just my 0.02.

Cool deal. Got chance to work on my sons 50 today. Went to the dealer to get a new jet and the smallest they had was a 74. They let me have it to try out, while they ordered me a 65 and a 70. The 74 is too much, it smokes alot and bogs down when you throw the gas to it. I am thinking the 65 will probably be my best bet. Man there aint much room in there for a filter. I dont know what shape of filter youve got but it looks like you could get a small pankake style filter in there, maybe just before where the hose turns down to go to the carb.

Eiger06, dont know what you came up with, but I did learn that there is allready a fuel filter/screen attached to the petcock up in the gas tank. I did not know if you were aware of this or not. Finally found a service manual for these little machines, and it showed it in there. Got .035 took off the head today installed a 65 main jet and did alot of work to the intake manifold. Wow what a difference, now the bike will sit still (hold the front brakes) and spin the bake tires by itself.
