I put a new petcock and carb kit from ebay on it.

First time ever on this site so not sure what I am doing. I have an lt 80 just got from friend. It would not start (after sitting for 4 years) and was not getting gas. I pulled carb and rebuilt (kit came with ATV). In mean time I pulled petcock and found o-ring was sealed inside housing not allowing gas to flow. I pulled the o-ring, cleaned opening and put back together. I got the bike put back together and it fired right up. However, it only runs well with the choke on and you are only able to push throttle about 1/4, then it boggs down and will stall. If you let off throttle, it idles fine. I have torn it down and cleaned out all the ports twice. I was told it ran fine before it was parked. I thought it might be starving for gax so I pulled the o-ring from the petcock and it runs the same I am not an expert at carbs. Any help would be great.

I think there is something blocking the main jet. Sorta weird since you just cleaned the carb.
You took both jets out and cleaned well?

 

I rebuilt it the first time and used brake cleaner (universal cleaner for me) and flushed all the jet ports. I thought it might be starving for gas so I removed the o-ring from the petcock just to try and same thing. I am going to try tearing it all down again this weekend and cleaning everything again. Weird as I can go at 1/4 throttle for an hour but anything over that it just boggs and will want to stall.

 

I'd do a compression test also.

 

I did a compression test and got 150 PSI. Good or Bad? I tore the carb back down and took the o-ring out between the main jet and the carb body. I couldn't see through the hole. I guess the o-ring was being squeezed by the jet. I also left out the rubber piece between the bottom of the bowl and the jet. It runs better. I can run it good with the choke on but cannot control the idle. With the choke off, the throttle has a hesitation between 1/4 and 1/2 throttle. if you leave the throttle there it dies. It will stall if left there but will run good at full throttle. I was going to try moving the throttle needle up a couple of notches. Any ideas? It is getting closer.

 

Just an FYI, brake cleaner is not recommended for use in ANY carburetor. Brake cleaner cand and will often ruin rubber and plastic - both of which are found in carbs. Carb cleaner is typically safer, but can still distort some plastics.

Try replacing (Not cleaning) both your pilot and main jets.

 

Another rebuild kit? I will give it a shot. At $20 it is worth a try.

 

Ok, carb kit only $13. I tore the carb down to nothing and flushed everything (with carb cleaner). Put it all back together. It runs great with choke. It runs without choke about 1/8th of the throttle. Anything past that, it dies unless I put the choke on. I had good light through the primary and secondary jets. The idle control does nothing to correct. I am beyond frustrated at this point. Any suggestions would be a godsend.
