From what I hear, they don't work.
Clean it up and lubricate and see what happens.

I have the same problem with a 2001 that I picked up for my son. The auto choke doesn't work but the carb works perfect otherwise. I have learned the thumbchoke method and it has worked perfect so far. You can get a new factory carb for a good price on ebay but the thumbchoke method has worked so well I am going to wait untill I get a better carb down the road.
The Thumbchoke Method.
Lock the parking brake and turn the key on.
Kneel down by the left front tire facing the quad.
With your right hand reach around under the tank area and forward and you will find a aprox 1" tube that goes straight up from the airbox. This is the airbox intake.
Cover the intake tube with your thumb.
Now reach up by your ear with your left hand and start it up.
Slowly move your thumb to let in more air as it warms up.
You will probably only have to do this each morning most of the time, but I am a west coaster.
The only drawback I have seen is that you will get a little fuel mist blowback into the airbox. It may drip a little but this will get you going untill you fix the problem. What is the problem is a good question. The new factory ebay carb has all of the carb mounted auto choke up to and including the connector that plugs into the wiring harness. If the problem we are having is above that then you just waisted your cash. Pick up a good carb that has a manual choke **** right on it and away you go. What carb is a question that I cannont answer at this time but I am sure others on the boards can.
I hope this helps you out for now.
