I am pretty sure that the choke is normally "on" in order to get it to start.
I DO NOT normally shut the fuel off everytime the engine is killed. My daughter would not remember to do that.
Again, I plan to put the rubber boot back on the carb (below the jets). I may also purchase a new OEM petcock.
I use Yamalube mixed at 32:1.
Stock plug.

That thing is obviously unfixable.

I suggest that you sell it to me for $100 and your headaches will be over ;-)

Default Fixed

I made sure we turned the fuel valve (petcock) off each time we turned the engine off. It starts every time with no problem. Not sure why, but the little LT carb can't seem to handle fuel flow when the engine is off.

The needle and seat in the carb is what stops the flow of fuel. The LT80 had a steel needle in a bronze seat. Most others have a rubber tipped needle, but not this one. I had a similar issue and cleaned the carb several times. Then I looked at the needle under a strong magnifying glass and could see pits on it.

Bought a carb kit just to get the needle and seat and it fixed it right up.

I agree, I had the same exact problem with both of my old 87's. I have the banshee petcock on also. I too bought a carb kit just to get the needle and seat because the old one didn;t have the rubber tit at the end of the needle. Buy a new carb kit and it will. It fixed both of my bikes and no more headaches.

Welcome to the forums zeek.
Do a compression check.

My bet is the bike is flooded. Having to hold the throttle open to start is is a tell tale sign of flooding.
