Hey everybody.

I bought my son a cheapo Chinese ATV. Overall it's actually quite good. Well after I tore it apart and put it all back together with proper torque, grease and thread locker.

But the shocks are absolute crap. They are over sprung and have no damping at all. I'm pretty sure they are absolute fakes.

So I've been looking online for replacements and can't find any. I don't want to buy the $20 eBay specials since I believe they will be the same fakes. I'm looking for something decent aftermarket or OEM from a kids ATV made by one of the big names like Yamaha, Kawasaki etc.

Specs are rear: 9.5" eye to eye with 7.4mm spring front: 10.5" eye to eye with 6.2mm spring.

I want to keep the height the same but want to do the spring chill diameter on the rear to around 6mm and front to around 5mm. Compression and or Rebound adjustability would be nice if aftermarket. But simply a real shock with no adjustability but real compression and rebound function would be fine to lol.

Can anybody help with aftermarket or something from any name brand ATV that would fit the bill?

 

Start looking at the top manufacturers of the similar machines. these are usually clones off the big names. Iv seen some posts where people swapped in sled shocks as well..

 

some say that the Polaris mini shocks work better but in general, any machines shocks will be very stiff.
Maybe try that Midwest mini guy. he sells some kind of shock for a LT80.
Or you can ELKA if you have a thick wallet.

 

Fox Float makes a 10.5" "MCR" shock...they are fully adjustable & rebuildable...and they are on sale ($230/ea)...9.5" is a very small rear...some of the ebay ones are more lightly sprung then others...I found some that were 110 lb or so...that's the rub with those...most are set with the preload for an adult...

 

If you have the specs a few calls to the aftermarket shock guys are in order. Hate to day it but you will probably be into the shocks for way more than the machine is worth.

 

Thanks or the help guys. I've tried looking online for more info on the stock shocks for Polaris, Yamaha, Kawasaki kids ATV's but can't really find anything. I tried a few dealers and they told me to look online, I may as well get myself involved in a naked wrap around with a couple bears in the woods!

I'd love those Fox shocks, but when my shocks almost double what the ATV is worth, I think my head's not in the right place lol.

I tried one of the front shocks on the back and while not having any compression and rebound function at all, it was sprung more appropriately. So I was thinking about buying one front shock and putting it on the rear with a couple preload clicks so that it's not softer than the front. I think the hardest part with whatever path I take is getting the weight of the spring balanced properly for the weight of my son.

Anyway, thanks for the tips guys, if anyone ever comes across a setup they know well, let me know. I'm surprised nobody has done this already and come up with a write up on it.
