to mod or not to mod? thats the question.

I have (2) 2001 Polaris Scrambler 90's for my kids. It's time to start modifying them to keep up with their riding skills. The 2001's had only about 2.2 inches of STIFF suspension, my kids biggest complaint. Drum brake are one of my complaints.
My question is, are these quads worth modifying? Should I be working with a different platform, or how about just buying a quad already modified?
I'm just looking to get better trail riding performance so what should mods should I be looking at first and what should I expect for a budget?
I was thinking new shocks all around, but I dont know about A-arms and swingarms ($500 shocks only vs.
$1500 complete suspension). With the engine I dont want to go full bore, not yet. I was leaning towards a air filter, exhaust system, carb jetting, and a clutch kit ($600-$700). Am I on the right track?
Also, my 6 year old son asked me to take him to the races to watch, because he thinks he wants to start racing. So I want mods done now to be upgradeable to race standards later (this is affecting my suspension decision- Works would be fine with the stock swingarm and A-arms for the trails, but if I am going to race I think that PEP or Elka is the way to go).
Any suggestion?

Yes, my son is 6. Also, if he wants to race I have to look at the size of the engine to keep him in age/size class. I'm already pushing it with a 6 year old and 90cc.

Three shocks - $489.00
+3 Arms - $325.00
Pipe and stuff - $340.00
Pipe, carb, intake, big bore, ported - $795.00

My problem with these little ones is I dont know what to do or the stages to do mods in with the mini's. That's why I need help. Am I wasting my time and money w/ modifying a Polaris. I see I can buy fully modified quads, it seems this might be a less expensive way to go, but I like to do the work and learn. I was also hoping to share that with my son.
WRH:
Elka shock set $750
A-arms +2"&1" $375
swingarm +3" $325
--------------------------------
$1450
Peak powersports :
A-arms w/ elka shocks $1100
swingarm $ 450
-------------------------------------------------
$1550
Peak powersports / Trinity racing: (engine)
stage II $ 650
stage III $ 765
stage IV $1520
Am I on the right track?

You need to do a little more checking into prices. The trinity stuff you will have to cut plastic to make it work. There kits are good no-brainer kits. WRH stuff is made for the Polaris. Elka shocks are over priced and not as good as Works in my option. Tomco is one you have not mentioned. The more you get at one time the better off you are but the stuff sometimes has to be bought together. The TOmco kit for instants, This kit is a all or nothing package. Just ask alot of questions and make sure the guy will work with you if something is not like you thought it should be.

OK.
Lets say I go with the works shocks $489, and extended A-Arms for $325, thats about $800-$850. That sounds good to me. (Do I need the a-arms? How about a extended swingarm?)
What should I look for in a supplier for the Polaris? I would like something that has a "clean" fit / installation.
I see the closest guy to me is Hetrick Racing in Pennsylvania. Should location matter to me?
I just found TOMCO's site. Thanks for the heads up.

Thread, the very first thing you need to do if considering racing is to check the AMA and ATVA rules in ur area in regards to age and quad size for ur 6 yr old. Plus there are several low dollar changes u can make that will increase performance on ur 90. Air box, jetting, removing the rev limiter, performance clutch kits, front and rear sproket changes. My son rides a Bombardier DS 90 and by simply changing the air box, jetting on the stock VM16mm carb and installing smaller tires we gained 3 bike lengths in 30 feet over the stock version!!
