I have a 2002 Speed #48, I have to reroute the fuel line, new service paper out.

The question is I have about 5 hours on the bike and there is alot of black carbon in the end pipe. I talked to the tech guys and they stated that as they break-in they start running alittle richer. Does that make sense to anyone? Also how do I correct it without spending the $1,500 for the complete maping system?

Any ideas?

Thanks

I wouldn't necessarily say you have anything to correct. I have carbon in my end pipe as well, that's going to be normal. What makes you think it's running to rich, just the carbon in the pipe or are you comparing how it looks to another Cannondale? It always pisses me off when I'm moving my C'dale around and I bump up against the end of my pipe, instant black circle on the ole blue jeans!!

Compared to the 400EX I had.

I'm going to say that I can't honestly tell if it's rich, I don't own gas meter thingy.

I thought the fuel injection eliminated rich/lean mixtures? Can someone explain this to me, or a website on how EFI works.

I spoke to the tech guys and this is a non-feed back system. In a nut shell the fuel injection in your cars also rely on a O2 sensor to determine if there is a lean or rich condition. The Cannondales do not use a O2 sensor so there is no way for the computer to know if the correct amount of gas and air are mixing correctly. The computer looks at the Trottle Sensor, RPM, Manafold Pressure (I think) and looks at the map for how much fuel is supposed to be going into the motor and tells the injector to shot X amount.

Without a sensor in the exhaust pipe I couldn't even trick it into thinking that it was running rich cause I wouldn't know.

Thanks Thumper,

I will be taking it to Trinity for some other work, so maybe they can do that while I'm there. We'll see.

Later
