Any Racing Advice - So California
#1
Are there any racers here from Southern California?
I've been kind of thinking about trying my hand at some racing (preferably MX), once I get a little more seat time on the new cannibal. I live in Ventura County, Calif., so LA County Raceway (LACR), and the new Piru racetrack would probably be the closest. Not sure if Piru will even allow quads? I heard the track at Hungry Valley/Gorman doesn't allow quads, but I'm not positive of that.
Anybody have experience racing at LACR? I'd probably be more of a recreational/racer, just doing it for fun and don't have the backing of a shop or manufacturer, so I'm not too serious. Besides, I'm 32 years old with a wife and mortgage. Just out there to push myself to be a better rider and enjoy the competition. I'm just wondering about the "vibe". Is it ultra competitive and everyone glares eachother down (similar to surfing) or is everyone cool and just happy to see another racer out there to increase the numbers?
All my riding buddies have dirtbikes, so I'd basically be doing this solo. I have experience racing mountain bikes, and competitive team sports, but this would be my first stab at motorsports.
Any advice from you racers, or experience with the So-Cal quad racing scene?

I know what you mean I am in the same boat, small differance, I'm 39. I get the old guy novice class. I am startng to look at Victorville and Compition park right now. I raced once at Glen Helan got second in a two quad race, first in class, and have the plaque to prove it. I plan on racing as a Hobbie, just like you and am trying to get some other riding partners to go to these tracks.
As far as money at the races, the one race cost me almost $200 for the day.
Food, gas, gate fee, entrance fee, AMA membership, kill switch.
I have to get Nerf Looking at AC's now and a kill switch and I'm ready. Let me know when your going adn you'll definatly have one other guy to race with.

It must be really expensive for yall to race. Most of the tracks around here have a $10 gate fee and a $25 entry fee. One race day will usually cost me about $50 but I usually bring food w/ me from home. Also, around here, all the racers are very cool. If you need help w/ something, you'll find the most helpful guys at the track. Sometimes the bike riders have their heads stuck up their @sses but for the most part, they're pretty cool too. You should definitely go out there and race... I'm 16 and my only regret is not starting racing earlier.
The only problem is... be ready to spend money on more than just the races. I'm talkin about mods (cause you know you're gonna want to be faster and you will break or bend something sooner or later) and the occasional hospital bill. Luckily I still live w/ my parents (like I said, I'm only 16) and they are nice enough to pay my last bill, and I have insurance.
