I've been running without mine for about a month now. No problems. I've
even raced a 2 hour harescramble without them.

They're just there to keep you from running over your legs. The heal gaurds don't support the fenders... if anything, the fender holds the heal gaurd up. I ran mine w/o the gaurds and it does look MUCH better, but after runnin over my leg during practice one day, I bolted them back up. Just to help the looks a little, I trimmed a lot of the side of the gaurds off so they didn't flare out the sides so much and it doesn't look to bad now.

I have a blaze and I also took them off and threw them away. Problem is I now have a broken fender from a muddy race. You can take the guard off just make sure you keep the portion that goes from the subframe to the fender. I have seen two cannondales with broken fenders from removeing all.

I took mine off and my fender cracked during a muddy race.
I made brackets to stiffen the fenders and haven't had any problem yet.
I don't like running with them because the mud packs up on them.

I understand---Mine broke after three races---I haven't had a problem since though. Mud is their enemy.
