Bad luck at the races
#1
Well,
I went to race today and only made it through the last lap of practice when trouble struck....couldn't upshift. I got back to the truck and found that the shifter moves down about normal, but it moves way higher up than it should and to get it to shift through the gears you have to pull it up to what is now the top of the shifter's travel, about halfway up the side cover. I don't know how it happened, or what is wrong at the moment, but warranty should surely cover it..........JIM

JIM,
Sorry to hear about your shifter woes there old friend.
I am as curious as you are concerning the shifter. Let us all know what you find in there.
You're right about one thing.......warranty should cover it.

yech! i hate those unknown problems.
My 'bull wouldn't upshift one day. Scared the crap outta me. The shifter tightening bolt had fallen out, allowing the shifter to slide in on the shaft where it would hit the raised part of the side case. Easy fix. I hope your problem turns out to be simple and quick too Jim.

This happened to me too in the last lap of a harescamble.
what happened to mine is there were burs on the shifting forks not allowing the forks to totally engage therfore sticking in gear.
my dealer pulled the transmission and filed down the burrs and no more problems.
hope this helps.

Jeff,
Just to be clear about if you had the same problem I have now...
My shifter will down shift about normally, just has a large amount of "free" area before it will catch to upshift. The shifter actually moves up quite a ways now. Here is why I ask...I looked at the engine service manual online and see that there is a ratchet mechanism that has "pawls" on it that control the shifter movement if I am right. If something came loose on this ratchet, then that would make some sense in respect to what the shifter is doing. Still will shift up and down through all the gears, just needs a lot of up movement before the shifter catches on the upside.......I am considering pulling off the left side cover and at least looking to see if that ratchet looks in tact...........any replies are appreciated......JIM
