Gibbons Wants BLM to Delay Sand Mountain Decision

Nevada Lawmaker Urges Compromise Instead of Closure

Washington, D.C.—Working to keep public lands accessible to the public, Congressman Jim Gibbons (R-Nev.) urged the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to postpone their decision on Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) usage at Sand Mountain Recreation Area near Fallon, Nevada. Gibbons advocated that more time be taken to craft a compromise solution that would allow the recreation area to remain open while protecting both the Kearny Buckwheat and the Sand Mountain Blue Butterfly.
“It is my understanding that the BLM plans to implement a new management plan at Sand Mountain by Labor Day. This rapid time frame will not allow for a thoroughly contemplated decision that includes consideration of numerous alternatives,” stated Gibbons.

In a letter to John Singlaub, BLM Field Manager, Gibbons outlined these alternatives, including the elimination of duplicate trails at Sand Mountain or assisting the BLM in launching an aggressive educational outreach program. Yet another compromise might be for recreational users of Sand Mountain to partner with local educational institutions to plant and grow Kearny Buckwheat in an environment where the plant, and its relationship with the Sand Mountain Blue Butterfly, can be further studied.

“Many of my constituents are concerned that the BLM will recommend that Sand Mountain be closed off to OHVs…However, many of these individuals and local officials have expressed their support for a compromise measure that will preserve both the Kearny Buckwheat and the Sand Mountain Blue Butterflies while still allowing for recreational activities to continue…After having explored the alternatives, I agree that a compromise can be reached,” Gibbons wrote.

“I ask that the BLM consider these compromises before making a decision and implementing any action…I am committed to responsible usage of our public lands, as well as responsible decision making. I respectfully urge you to review this process and press for an extension of the decision making deadline in order to consider these important proposals,” concluded Gibbons. The complete text of Gibbons letter is available upon request.
