Can they keep you from riding them on your own property if the ban is passed?

Most State laws have no engine size restrictions based on a youths age.The age/cc recommendations are in place because of the 1988 Consent Decree Agreement that was signed between the manufactures of ATVs and the CPSC,all as a direct result of the injuries sustained on three wheelers. And for the most part, these recommendations are ridicules and actually IMPEADE ATV Safety training.

Sales staff are warned against selling ATVs that exceed the manufactures recommendations and if caught doing so,can be fined big $$ and lose their dealership francise.AGE/CC recommendations are as follows,

6-11yrs, manufactures recommend ATVs with an engine size of UNDER 70cc
12-15yrs,manufactures recommend ATVs with and engine size of 90cc or less

What this means to YOU is,

1.The sales staff cannot KNOWINGLY sell you an ATV that exceeds these manufactures recommendations. The best thing to do is NOT mention that the quad of YOUR choice is for someone under 16 if it exceeds the manufactures recommendations.Put your youth thru a State certified ATV safety program and make she they are under adult visual supervision when riding.

I can tell you that right now, anything can happen.Nobody expected that the CPSC would ban 3 wheelers back in the 80s,it happened though.

We have a fight on our hands and if we dont get moving NOW,more bans and restrictions are very possible. This would be a huge smack in the face to the large majority of those ATVers who are safe and responsable users.

We have the tree huggers, that for NO other reason than they want NO MOTORIZED vehicles in the woods, will manipulate untrue and unproven statements to those that monitor our sport. We have doctors in emergency rooms that blame the ATV for the patients injuries instead of blaming the ignorance of the rider or parent for not adhearing to the guidelines set forth for these machines. We have special interest groups that want your entire 5000 acrea of forest land closed to preserve the rare species of a particular insect, bird,or reptile ect?Thes folks will say/do ANYTHING to get what they want.

Yep,
its for real, and everyone who loves this sport better get moving and dont depend on others to do what needs to be done NOW.Get these letters out to your reps, practice safe/responsable riding, and spread the word to to others that they need to also get involved.

The future of our sport depends on it!

i think that these age laws are the stupidest things ever. i have been riding and racing since age 5. when i was 8 i had a blaster which was piped, ported, 34mm carb, wiseco piston and milled head and that thing ripped. when i was 13 i built my banshee which had pipes, extreme race porting, aftermarket machined heads, 36mm carbs, pistons, etc the works. also when i was 14 i rode a 1990 650 polaris snowmobile with high rpm(9800rpm) race triple pipes w/stingers, race porting, milled heads, wiseco pistons, 40mm carbs, and of course nitrous oxide. the point i am trying to make is that if you have the ability, skill, and the b@lls for that much then i think anyone any age should ride what they please. of course you are going to say then why the h*ll do you ride a little stock warrior now. the reason is because i am not very serious into atv riding anymore and i want something reliable to cruise the backroads with my friends on.

Very few States have age/cc LAWS.They are manufactures RECOMMENDATIONS as part of the CPSC Consent Decree. The recommendations must be followed by the sales staff.

Just to let some of you know how serious the age law is, last yr a 8 yr boy was killed here, on his parents property. The grandfather was the one who bought it for him. They charged the grandfather with involuntary manslaughter because he bought one that was too big. 350 rancher I think.

So, yes they can charge you even its on your own property.

BTW, I dont know if they pressed the charges or if they dropped them but that was the original charge.

Guys,

The one thing that pisses me off faster than anything else is my government passing laws to protect me from myself. The sad fact is that it's become necessary for them to do it. Why? Because I don't seem to be responsible enough to do it on my own.

Our sport IS going to be policed. If we don't do it ourselves, it will be done for us. Doctors, Lawyers and Politicians are driven by simple economics. They will never offend the adults involved (because of the dollars involved) so they attack the machines. And to an uneducated public this makes perfect sense. It becomes the machines fault that people are injured and dying, and no blame is attached to the parents and adults who should be responsible. Since we (as ATV owners) are a minority, we don't have the voting clout of the other, better organized special interests.

So where does that leave you and I? We have to be willing to make some hard, and sometimes unpopular, decisions. If your riding buddy wants to put his young child on a machine that is obviously too big for him to control, refuse to go with them. Remind ourselves and those that we ride with that these machines were never meant to be a replacement babysitter for the television. All we have to do is be able to read the stickers and manuals. Come on guys, this isn't rocket science. And these are our children.

Also, we need to get off our butts and support those organizations that dedicate themselves to fighting just such issues. I don't pitch one group over another, just find the one that best addresses your concerns and get involved. If we don't get involved and take the necessary steps on our own, then we can't bitch when we're required to march to someone else' drumbeat.

I'll get off my soap box now.

Keith

You make a good point man. I just turned 16. And we want this sport to keep growing and keep the kids safe. My best advice to people just starting to ride or have been riding for years a helmet and boots. Wear pants and a long sleeve shirt. Chest protectors aren't a bad idea either. If they start putting bans on kids under 16. Pretty soon they will move it to 18. Then we'll all have to put our quads away until we are 18.Ride hard but ride safe.
