Oswego Police Chief William Ruggio has been placed on administrative leave by Oswego’s Mayor, William Dunsmoor.
In a statement, Dunsmoor said "The leave is to give Ruggio time to deal with his current personal circumstances." In his place, Dunsmoor has installed Captain Michael J. Dehm Jr. as Acting Police Chief.
Dunsmoor had told our Dan Cummings Wednesday morning that under the circumstances, it was hard to see Ruggio continuing to operate the police department.
Ruggio’s home at 14 White Tail Circle and another property he owns in Oswego was raided by federal agents around 4 PM Tuesday afternoon. An Assistant United States Attorney says they were looking for stolen goods and related records. Three snowmobiles and an ATV were taken from Ruggio’s properties.
Dunsmoor says he had a conversation with Ruggio this morning, and that Ruggio offered an explanation of why he had the vehicles, but Dunsmoor would not tell us what the explanation was.
Ruggio was selected to be police chief by former Oswego Mayor John Gosek. Gosek resigned after being accused of offering a third party money to have sex with two minors.
Ruggio was a former Oswego Police Chief, serving from 1987 to 1991. He was suspended, and then fired for ethical violations, including running his private rental business out of the chief's office.
Ruggio replaced former chief Alexander Zukovsky, who retired at midnight on August 31st.
