any input as to which are better to buy. more important, which are to be avoided. i'll be riding in a lot of tree covered areas, and have heard some models lose theire signals. thanks!

Don't get a Brunton MNS....It has all kinds of goodies (altimeter, barometer, compass, sunrise/sunset, etc...) BUT......
You can't attach an external antenna and the one it has is fairly weak, you can't use mapping software and a laptop because you can't have a power cable and a data cable connected at the same time----if it's hooked up to a computer it has to be powered by batteries (8AA)....it's overly expensive.....
I'd probably get something from Garmin....the Garmin V is supposed to be really good and you can hook up an external (active) antenna to it, connects easily to a laptop for use with mapping software such as TopoUSA or StreetAtlas and it has a "built-in" map....also will do voice directions
I have an MNS (my second one because the first one died).....I don't like it at all.....I'd rather have ANYthing else.....

You can click on the shopping cart here:
http://www.gpscity.com/gps/brados/09...6/rino120.html
to get the $210 price on a Rhino 120.
Only GPS with FRS/GMRS radio and locator feature to keep your electronics simplified.
Accessories are salty; hate the toggle switch and am not impressed with how you navigate the functions..........yet it is a great tool and a handy 'back-up' for the money.
Supposedly a hot item for our boys over in Iraq and Afghanistan; as one of the items they purchased 'themselves' to supplement Uncle Sam's 'reliable' standard military issue gear. (source: USA Today feature article on the extra tools a soldier is forced to purchase for replacement of the government's 'researched' technology that doesn't hold up in the real world..........which is absolutely 'disgusting' in my book ).

The GPS with the radio is a gimmick. Don't waste your money on combination tools.
I use a Garmin ETrex Vista. It mounts on the handle bars of my bike and has performed flawlessly for me. And on two occasions it's really saved the day for me.
Please don't take my word for it, check this little jewel out for yourself. I think it's one of the smartest outdoor equipment purchases I've ever made. Man, if I'd only had one 40 years ago...........

I have a magellan 330, older model. I don't usually lose signal unless the Army is maneuvering in Ft Polk, that kinda funks things up back home
I say get something inexpensive with mapping features... that way if it breaks, it will be cheap to replace. After all, it will be mounted to an ATV, thus more likely to be broken

I use the Garmin GPS V. It works great with the bike handlebar mount from Garmin. Past GPSs have been the Garmin III, a early model Magellan and a GPS Sport from Lowrance.
Use the MapSource software from Garmin along with the Roads and Recreation Software.
