We're planning some exploring in the Oregon outback and any advice on rack-mounted containers would sure help. There are wide flat stackable designs and ones that stand on edge with metal straps, and the good old everyday utility types held on with bungies, and no doubt some I haven't seen yet. Advantages/disadvantages to any you've used?

Gooch,

I bungie the container to my rear rack of the Rancher. This works ok for casual riding. One day while doing some hard riding, the container flipped up on its side, it didn't come lose but gas did leak out.

I too am looking for something better. I have seen the one that are flat & mount on your racks but they cost $70 or so.

snowshark,

Yeah, by the time you get a couple stackable flat gas things and maybe one for water it could be close to $200, and it looks like they take up a lot of rack room. Cabela's has a rack extension for the Rancher now that's about $45 and that would make a square plastic can more secure I guess, as well as leave room for other stuff.
BTW, I emailed your club a couple weeks ago but didn't hear back, although I might have messed up the message. I'll phone this w.e.

I have always been fond of the Moose containers. They can be interlocked on the side and can even stack em. Little bit cheaper than the flat ones. I used to have a rubbermaid that would leak like hell.

Just a suggestion...you refer to "we",so I assume there will be more than one quad going. How about making a cache of fuel & other possible supplies prior to your trip? If the general area is accessible by truck you could utilize most any type of container compatible with gas. Just haul as much as needed to one or more secluded spots and cache the stuff, then you wouldn't have to carry it on your quads. If you have a gps you can enter the site(s) & return to them when required.

Gooch,

Thunder mountain has a ride this weekend. Some of the members are going to Cathlamet, the area were we maintain trails, and some are going to the sand to ride.

Jerry & Pam are the President of the club. Also, we have a meeting & ride July 4th in Cathlamet, let me know if you need directions.

The cache idea is a good one--just have to learn about my gps. I've got a Magellan--got the video, highlighted a how-to book, got a cool case. All I need to do now is get off my butt and take it out where I can actually apply it. I think spending 1/2 hr with somebody who knows those things is better than ten hrs. wandering around a parking lot gazing at the sky pressing this button and that while trying to read the manual in your teeth. There are all kinds of things out there you might want to find again.
Thanks for your inputs. I'll look into Moose stuff too.

You didnt mention what you ride. I have a Scrambler 500 and with the stock rack those flat gas containers stick out into the seat and make for an uncomfortable seating position. Dont use it unless I have to. I usually just bungie a typical plastic one on. HTH
