that should be all u need
id still go w/ the switch anyway, it'll be like $10 more or so.
the thing is w/ a hub...only 1 pc can do anything with the network
at a time...otherwise, a network collision will occur...both pc's will dig up a random number and try do sending data after that time period is up...this is done over and over again until everything gets sent correctly.
like if 1 pc is downloading a mp3 off the net and the other pc is say downloading a movie off the other pc - network collision...and the way these things work (tcp/ip) is that everything that is sent...the receiving end sends back ackowledging that it got the info...so there is a lot of stuff happening all the time.the more things going on...the more collisions and slow downs and problems you may run into....

also...how far are you going to go with your pc's? like..how far they are apart. standard ethernet cable has a maximum length of about 300feet with basic cat5 cable.

you should need only:

1 10/100 ethernet card for each pc
1 cat5/cat6 ethernet cable for each pc(w/ RJ45 connector attached)
and 1 switch

then windows will run you thru the networking wizard and will simply make a floppy disk for you to run on the other machine..and that's it

I have another desk right beside me, so the pcs will be right next to each other. Appreciate all the info man, seems like you know your stuff.

Suzuki587 - What type of internet connection will you have. Cable, DSL, Dial, wireless, Satellite, ISDN? The reason I ask is that you may want to consider a Linksys device to put in front of your network. They provide some protection from hackers and have the switch included. In addition, they help hide your network from other pcs, provide dynamic addressing to pcs on the network and allow the pcs to share the network connection if you have cable or DSL. The college you are attending may have an ethernet (network) connection as well.

EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch

I use one at home to connect to the cable network and it works great. Feel free to PM me if you have additional questions, my responses may not be very timely though as the holidays are approaching. Good Luck....

the video card is the most important thing as far as gamming. The celeron processor has so much more of an advantage speed wise that i think that it would be better than the 750 amd. As far as i know the emachines come with on board video cards, i would recomend changing it. Does it have a pci or agp slot? my 633 emachines only has 3 pci, i was wondering if they finnaly started putting agp slots in them.

One of my computers is so old that the power button just quit working so I had to make a hole on the side so I can take a very long screwdriver and then with the help of a flashlight I take the screwdriver and tap the power button on the hard drive.
