Winches....
#1
Does anyone out here have an opinion on which winches to stay away from? Looks to me like there are alot of WARN's and SUPERWINCH's out there. WARN seems to me to be the best but I would appreciate hearing from your experiences.
Thanks

i used to have a super winch (1500 pounds) on my old machine. i was not very happy with it. right out of the box it seeemed like it would struggle to free my old honda. when i bought my king quad i bought a warn winch (2000lb). i like the warn quite a bit better. i like the controls on the warn better and it is definately a stronger winch. i have gotten a little smarter over the years and added some important accesories to my tool kit, like extra cable and a ****** block. the ****** block is the key. even if i was using my old superwinch i would have had a lot more luck using a ****** block. my personal preference is for the warn. take a look at what kind of machine you are going to be puting the winch on. on a tiberwolf or a recon a superwinch and an occaisional ****** block would be adequate. if your machine is over that 600lb mark i would suggest a warn winch and a ****** block. if you really want to go all out get a 2500lb warn.

Ramsey makes a compact 2500lb winch in which the motor is built inside the take up reel. It has a 252 to 1 gear reduction and is reasonably priced in the 200.oo area. It is easy to install, and comes with a one year unconditional warranty. Also with the motor insde the spool it is completly waterproof.

I am a forester and we have Warn winches on all of our trucks and atv's(2500#) always work well. We do not have a Ramsey dealer nearby but have two Warn dealers. I have owned at one time or another the 2000# for atv,s, 4000, 8000 high profile, 8000 low profile and now have a 2500 on atv and a 9000 on a 4x4 Tahoe, have yet to have the first problem with any of them, not even a replaced solenoid. And they are used quite often. I may just be lucky as some of the other foresters have had to replace some solenoids but no major problems. A ****** block and nylon tow strap are acessories you need to carry.
