Trouble with Honda Topic
#4
It seems like the topics with a ton of posts takes the server much more time to respond. Also, once it responds, it takes a while to download all the threads and then the browser is slow in processing the HTML to draw the screen. Maybe reducing the number of threads to display by changing the oldest date of threads you want to view in your profile might help. What I do sometimes is hit STOP after a few seconds of page loading, if all I want to see are the newest posts.

If you are using Netscape:
Netscape is very particular about closing the <table> tag. Sometimes there is a missing table tag somewhere that will prevent the page from displaying - you will just get a white screen, seems more common on the on the ones with lots of posts. Just hit the RELOAD button and it will usually come up the 2nd time.
Yes, the forums are slow most of the time, even with T1 connectivity.

At least I know I'm not alone. I can only run 31200 bps due to the crappy phone line. And to Gabe, yea I'm using Netscape and when I use the reload it still doesn't work sometimes. I can play
a whole game of solitare waiting for it to load.
Thanks Guys

Well, at least you know which browser to use
What I generally do is:
Right click on the links, open them in a new window, this does many things....
It allows me to close a thread I'm done with instead of hitting the back button, which save me the time (and the server bandwidth) of reloading the forum I was in.
It allows me to browse the other postings while the page I requested loads.
I can open several windows and allow them to load while I browse a different message
If a page fails to load properly, I can reload it and view something else while it is being pulled again.
Works pretty slick, minimal time is wasted waiting on the server, since it is generally loading something in the background while I am reading a post.
At home I generally connect between 28.8 and 37.3, sometimes I connect as high as 42K, but my modem retrains constantly at that speed (I could limit the connect speed, but it doesn't occur enough to warrant messing with it). At the phone company side, I run thru an old AT&T SLC-96 system, and although it is direct interface (no extra D/A conversions), it is old enough to have trouble with bandwidth, modems ran at a blazing 2.4K when it was manufactured. I would guess your phone runs thru a similar system before it gets back to the central office, it is pretty common practice and there are many similar systems as well as other things the phone company does to get the most out of their cable. Heck some old COT SLC-96 systems that run at Mode 2 will only allow 9.6 connections, we have a couple around here.
Really though, this site doesn't run all that much faster on the T1, it is faster, but not as drastic a difference as it is most anywhere else on the net. Spend most of the time waiting for the server to repsond....
